I've just bottled from a DJ. The DJ started with 4.5L in it and I ended up with 7 500ml bottles.

That means I lost a litre somewhere!! I really struggle starting the syphon and I reckon a bottle ended up on the kitchen floor. I can only think that the other 500ml must be in the sediment...

Any tips for minimising losses? Anyone using 1 gal DJs getting more than 7 500ml bottles?

best tip i got was to put a piece of muslin/hop sock over the syphon trap. stops the crap going in allowing you to syphom more out.
 
I've just bottled two 5L DJ's of Turbo Cider and only managed to get 8 500ML out of both. The rest was the gunk at the bottom.

One of them came out at nearly 9% so 8 bottles of that is probably enough for now ;)
 
I normally get just under 4 litres of wine out of a 4.5 litre DJ so two possibilities spring to mind:

1. The brew isn't being left long enough for the yeast to fall out of suspension and compact on the bottom of the DJ. Given enough time and with "non-pulp" types of wine the yeast will normally compact down to a depth of +/-1cm.

2. Brewing something like the "Apple & Plum Jam Wine" in the photograph. I used Apple & Plum Jam forgotten in a cupboard for at least three years and discovered that the apple pulp floated and the plum pulp sank; so all I could do was collect the stuff in the middle. After two sessions of Finings and a wait of two months or so, I think I got less than 5 litres out of the two DJ.s.

The good news is that it turned out to be a beautiful tasting wine ... :thumb: :thumb:

Isn't this just how it is in homebrewing and winemaking - the "ordinary" gets churned out by the gallon, yet that special beer/wine is a small batch that disappears quickly.
I suppose you can't have your beer and drink it :D
