I found that i couldnt get the bung out when the tyre valve is in, and did have to push it into the barrel to remove, luckily i have girly small hands and got valve out (still took awhile) but could tie some string to it to get it out.

the valves i used were car tyre valves and most co2 pumps have adaptors for both, I got my pump of ebay was £5. the co2 cartidges were from a online tyre inflators.co.uk. halfords was more expensive
Cheers ajt, I'll have a look on ebay then - like the string idea above, best remedies are usually the simplest..

Not being a serious cyclist.... (although I got one in the garage somewhere)....I never knew you could get CO2 for bike tyres....(derrrrr!!). Sounds like I could use this system for the minikegs I use. I forsee a trip to Halfords in the near future...I'm guessing that's where the CO2 gear comes from. ? Do the bike schrader valves fit car tyre valves OK? How much does the CO2 gear cost?

DO NOT BUY CO2 from your local bike shop as they tend to sell at a premium price.

My local bike shop sell them at £2 each. I love the guy when it comes to bike maintenance and bike stuff but for brewing I would go to here ...

... at 68p each!

Well, I would if I needed 16g cartridges but I have modified my 16g carrier to take 8g cartridges as per this and it works. :thumb: :thumb:

Thanks Dutto. I'll be searching ebay/amazon etc for a good deal soon. Like your pics of the 8g/16g mod. Are they threaded to fit the tyre inflator gizmo. Or are they for the proper minikeg injectors?

They are the ordinary 8g capsules that I use on my King Keg when the natural carbonation gets low.

I know I could get them cheaper, but I generally use my local Wilco ...

The £2 a capsule charged by my local bike shop for the 16g threaded CO2 capsule is the same as that charged at Wilco.

Success after buying a keg of bitburger german lager i started drinking flow stopped so i removed there bung and replaced it with mine(tyre valve, washer) injected co2 with my tyre inflater and got flowing again then i had a weeks hols, I left it in the fridge under some pressure, came back and poured a nice pint under pressure it held pressure and tasted good. So I shall be using this when i get round to brewing some more beer. The grey bungs dont work with my valves only the 2 piece black vented ones with the vent hole sealed.

Just wanted to revive this thread as I watched it at the time but I'm thinking of asking for some easy keg/mini kegs for Christmas and I like this idea a lot.

Things I think I will need:
Easy kegs- I've got one empty hob goblin keg and I'll look out for deals before Christmas.
Replacement bungs - I've got 3 of the grey two piece bungs for use with the party star system. Can these be used or do I need to get the red and black ones?
Tyre valve - will these ones do?
A tyre valve core remover - I'm not really clear about what this is for.
Some kind of plumbing olive - again I'm a bit confused about what this is for. Please can someone post a link to the thing I need and a photo of how it is fitted.
A tyre inflator - will this one do?

Is that everything?

Also, when I removed the bung from the hob goblin keg I had to destroy it to get it out. Is it possible to reuse these bungs with the valve?

Thanks for your help.

The tyre inflated will work its similar to the one I use for force carbing my pet bottles however they screw into the valve thread so go slow with it as the valve froze open on mine and dumped 16g of co2 into a 2ltr bottle with a resulting bang my hand was throbbing and hurting for days not to mention 2ltrs of lovely beer all over the kitchen so maybe a tyre pressure tester maybe a good idea so can test pressure as with those there is no regulator to pre set pressure

Thanks for the cautionary tale. Did you use one of the tyre inflator with a knob? If so how come you couldn't just shut off the gas?

How do you attach the tyre valve to a bottle, just drill a hole?

Yeah the valve has a knob but controlling the flow is difficult and as I found too much use and too fast flow resulted in what I assume was the valve to freeze open. Yes to fit the valves to bottle tops drill a hole in the top cap there is a video of how to do it on YouTube though metal bolt in valves are recommended

I use a cycle tyre inflator to carb up PET bottles (via a matching schrader valve), but I just have to 'stab it' onto the valve, very quickly, and it 'opens & shuts' by itself. It hasn't got a seperate manual on/off valve. A very quick stab (1/4 of a sec), is enough to carb up a 1 litre bottle that's about 3/4 full of flat, chilled beer. Then I just slosh it about a bit for a minute, open, drink...! Got the valves from my local tyre place (Elite Tyres Canterbury - 4 for £2), and the tyre inflator and gas bottles online. Halfords stock them but a bit more expensive.
?....think I've forgotten the original query....but hope this helps...

Again, sorry to resurrect an old thread.
l’m considering something like this myself, but using tubeless schrader valves (coated in rubber) and drilling a hole through the top of the keg to insert them, then replacing the normal venting valve when full of beer (which I have done before).

But the question I wanted to ask was, does the rubber odour from the rubber valve coating affect the taste or aroma of the beer?
And does the rubbery smell disappear over time?

Last thing I want to do is spoil 5l of beer 😉
