Milled grain shelf life

Right, I'm on the path that will eventually lead to an AG setup....but getting grain supplies isn't going to be exactly easy up here....

Transport issues aside, the one thing I am unsure about is how long milled malt will keep and what's the best way of storing it? There's no point in me ordering in a bulk of the stuff if it is going to go off on me.

As an aside, would it be easier to eventually invest in a miller and do my own malt (presuming whole grain will keep longer, that is)?

we store our grain in black bags and have some 2 years old and its still usable

Similar to Wendy, I got a sack ready milled from Rob, 'The Malt Miller' and due to circumstances I wasn't brewing and some of the grain was left in sealed bags in a storage box for nearly 12 months :!: When I did get to use it, it was absolutely fine :thumb:

i keep ,ine in the original sack or bags then put in a metal bin just to stop any little critters getting any ideas
