I have been reading Ron Pattinson's blogs recently http://barclayperkins.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/mitchell-butler-mild-ale-1935-1993.html, and I think we should all make the effort to brew more mild this year. A completely underrated beer, and probably not widely know about in various parts of the country, but having drunk gallons of the stuff here in Brum, some good and some bad, it is one of my favourite beers. Now I have brewed Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby, a mild of yesteryear, and it is superb, but ashamedly I have not brewed an actual lower abv mild that I drunk so much of in the past, but I am aiming to correct that with a version of Highgate Mild, the brewery now sadly closed http://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/General-News/Highgate-Brewery-mild-protest-won-t-suffice.

The other inspiration is John Clarke

I drink more mild than any other commercial beers put together, camra did a campagne for mild last year to encourage more to drink it

I entirely agree, Mild is a fantastic beer. :thumb:

It's a real pity it's not more commercially available. It's also cheap to make and ready to drink in a few weeks which is surely a bonus for any commercial brewery (and home brewery!).

:drink: look even the smilies are drinking Mild! :D

I am also fond of a Mild and have some on tap at the moment.
I was also pleased with the camra campaign to promote this type of beer as I would like to see it more readily available.

Have you come up with any recipes good ed? I'd like to peruse :)

I was going to base a Highgate Mild on GW's recipe, but use flaked maize for the sugar, add a bit of caramel for colour/flavour, and hop with Goldings and Fuggles, haven't decided on the yeast yet.

Bank's Mild +1, although probably not as good as it used to be, but what a lovely pour :thumb:

Im not sure it is closed... I'm sure they had this on in my local club a few months back... or is another brewer making highgate dark mild under the same name?
Google reveals it is brewed by Davenports in Smethwick.

Cheers RPT. I did see this but I thought it was just the name of the beer, not THE beer!

It's very common for beers to be brewed under licence or for old names to be taken over by other breweries (either part of the same group or unrelated companies). Many of the classic old beers are now owned by the international lager brewing conglomerates. Since these companies haven't got a clue about real beer they get the beers brewed by other breweries.

Highgate Brewery was opened in 1898 brewing beer for the local leather industry workers with a 100,000 barrel capacity, it was bought by Mitchells & Butlers in 1939, and was pretty much just brewing mild, and probably the biggest brewer of mild in the world, as demand waned, it was sold to Bass in 1961, then there was a management buyout in 1995 and it was run as a brewery with several pubs, during this time, 1987, the Davenport Brewery in Bath Row closed and Highgate acquired the Davenports brand, it was then bought by Aston Manor Brewery in 2000, who then sold to Global Star Pub Group in 2007, before being put into liquidation in 2010. Global Star in Smethwick own the brand so that is why you see the name. There is a Friends of Highgate Brewery association who are fighting to see it restored or still used as a brewery.
