Hi All,

Just set up my brewery in our airing cupboard (with the wife's approval), and have today started my first ever
home brew. Young's Harvest Pilsner. Hopefully it'll go okay but I'm already scouring the forum for tips and info and am looking forward to tasting the results.

Regards

James

Hi and welcome, I would make sure it's not to warm in your airing cupboard. Never brewed that beer but lagers tend to like colder temperatures.

Thanks Dennis. There isn't actually an immersion in there or anything so hopefully all will be okay fingers crossed. I should imagine I've messed it up some other way though anyway by not rinsing the kit enough after sterilising or the water being too warm when adding the yeast etc. It's all part of the fun finding out though.

hi James... :thumb: .
and a big welcome to the forum ...

James, you are only a few miles north of me, Harvest Lager is OK but it will be better for a cool ferment, ignore the times in the instructions, ferment it cool down to 1.000'.995, rack and bulk prime with 2-3oz golden syrup, bottle in PET [500ml pop bottles] and store it cool 7-9C for six months, it will blow your mind, there are much better Lager kits on the market which will also be better for cool fermentation and long storage, Dave Lines "Brewing Beers Like Those You Buy" is an excellent guide to reproducing just about everything you would like to drink. ;)

Thanks for the welcome, and the tips. Particularly yours ohbeary I'm very pleased to say that the first brew seems to have begun. I have bubbles!

Now I've just got to do a bit of thread searching to work out what on earth you're all talking about with the FV, rack and bulk prime, FG, Spray Malt, pitching temp, etc etc.

Seems like there are so so many variables but hopefully I'll get something worth the effort out at the end.

Now, quick question. I've amassed a shed load of glass bottles and invested in a capping tool. Do i need to sterilise the bottles or is a thorough thorough clean good enough?

Cheers.

Give them a good clean then sterilise them just before you up your brew in them :thumb:
