Interesting suggestion, but they're not as robust as those look. The hoops i keep finding are incredibly thin and can be ground into peices between your thumb and forefinger.

I brewed on the Friday just gone and found two hoops in the bottom on the BV boiler before I started adding the water for the mash. 😣

Brown and crumbly? Could it be beerstone/limescale? Maybe from the inside if the holes in the false bottom? Perhaps the metal is contracting in a cold garage and releasing them.

Is it something like this? Are the holes the same diameter as these 'metal' rings?

I wondered about some kind of mineral deposit too, but I couldn't figure out how they'd come out so uniform until you pointed at the false bottom, which would make sense:
- Deposit forms on the edges of false bottom holes
- Once packed away the deposit dries out, hardens and falls off false bottom.

That or there's some kind of weird alien bugs in the box you're storing it in.

They look like they have come from some threaded item to me and may not be metalic but mineral, possibly water mineral residue that has dried in the threaded item

Ps your water very mineral rich or are you adding to adjust the water as it may be due to too much etc

I think you may have solved this!
I'll need to measure the next 'hoop' i find to be sure, but I think they could be coming from the holes in the false bottom. I do clean it after each brew, but even after a good scrubbing it's still quite discoloured - sort of tea stained.

I'd always assumed the hoops were metal because they're so uniform in appearance that they look machined, but they're also so fragile, that they could well be deposit from the dried sediment.

I feel like i need to improve my post brew clean up process 😬 (the BZ itself is spotless stainless steel, honest)!

Meant to add - thank you everyone who has contributed suggestions. I'll post an update once I've measured a hoop and hopefully it will be case closed.
