I've switched to Linux, yes I know there are a few Linux viruses but with common sense I have avoided any problems. Even with Mcafee, Norton, Avast or AVG I've had the occasional problem on Windows. I think installing AV can give a false sense of security.

+1 for AVG used it on all my pc's since i started using them, never had a virus, used norton for all of an hour and uninstalled it.

not so up to date on pc antivirus now as i mainly use mac but never had a problem with AVG when i had it, and a large number of my family still use it.

After seeing Windows8 on the new PC we just got for the MiL, I think I'll go Linux next time.

There's a hackable version of Minecraft for the Raspberry Pi though... And the missus reckons an RPi would be good for the lad to learn programming...

In over a decade of working in antivirus I saw exactly 1 Mac virus, and it was easy to clean.

The last few pc's i have fixed i have put avast free on. I find this a great antivirus. If you really want to buy one then take a look at nod32 i have used this before and loved it.

As i run Linux most of the time i always have clamAV on hand for fixing windows machines and scanning usb sticks

And of course you will know this already OB but Mac OS is based on BSD which is effectively Linux/Unix and Linux/Unix is IMHO, the best OS in the world and almost completely free and adaptable and unfriendly to virus's due to the locked kernel.

I agree wholeheartedly with you OB I think Windows 8 has finally put the nail in the coffin of PCs for anyone who really knows what a computer is for. I have 3 Macs but still have 10 PCs/Laptops on the go, one of which I want to use as a temp controller for my planned brewing/cellar rooms :) I will install Linux to run it. I will never use Windows 8. It takes bloat-ware to the next level, Microsoft have missed the boat and Apple will now clean up.

Yes I know, how can someone use 13 computers?, don't ask...., I also bake bread, play guitar and now brew wine, I still have time to watch an hour of TV a day usually while drinking the latter.

Isn't it just the minecraft server that's Pi hackable? or have they managed to unlock MC itself?

I dunno what the person I heard this from meant by hackable, TBH. I mean you can add mods to your client any time you like anyway, even write your own if you know Java.
