In dave lines book Brewing beers like those you buy,, he says to add grain to water etc then raise the temp by 6 degrees. How can you do this if your using the cool box type mash tun. Or is it not really that important
when using a cooler, I have added my mash (strike) water at 73C which when mixed with my 20C grain, the mash temp reduces to approx 68C. then, when sparging, I add 78C water. Does that help?
make your stirke temp around 75 degrees then when you add your grains it will drop a bit to about 66 degrees which is what your looking for because your coolbox is insulated it will retain the heat When i ,made mine i filled it with water and checked the temp then rechecked after 90 min to see how much it dropped grains will hold the heat better than just water butbest to check before you mash in
I strike at 74deg this gives me a 67/68 mash temp with 5Kg grain and 12l hot water. First few times have a kettle of boiling water handy to raise the temp if necessary until you get used to the temp needed., or some cold water to cool it down (74 is the temp in the boiler when it reaches the MT is is about 72 due to warming the MT)
Just remember to let it stand for a couple of min before/after adjusting the temp.
It sounds difficult but is actually quite easy to control once you know your thermal loss in the MT (cold - 72 deg)
