Mash Tun Blues

I don't know what came over me when I bought my thermometer for my shiney mash tun thermopot

I know I have to cut a bigger hole in the outer skin and fit the thermo well to the inner skin, so I got a thermometer with a thermo well pocket thingy.
This one:

Now that's all well and good, BUT! The thermometer won't push all the way into the tube and lock as the outer skin will get in the way, thus I either have to get a different thermometer, or, adapt it in some way to not slide in as far but still sort of lock :hmm:

Any ideas?

I would do this, but the dial is 70mm

have you considered the tank connector compression type fittings to grip the probe body directly and not use the thermopocket? or if using the thermometer in other pockets too using a wider compression fitting on the thermopocket sleeve itself alowing you a bit more flexibility in depth positioning?

If thinking about widening the whole you could use trim to line it, it would look a lot neater :hmm:

Have you thought about the external size of the thermowell and maybe a compression fitting, that would allow you to move the collar of the thermowell to the outside if you get my drift. I have the very same Thermometer, I,ll go measure it for you.

The thermowell diameter is 11.5mm.........so maybe find a compression gland that will accept that and fit it to the internal wall and then slide the thermowell to where you want it on the outside.

Excuse my ignorance but is a compression gland like a compression pipe joiner?

Yes..... I think you get my idea now :thumb: bit like a tank connector only smaller diameter

Ah....got it.... use a 20mm tank connector -- 20mm female to female (they are around 40-50mm long) -- then screw the thermowell into the other end. bingo :thumb: also make sure to use ptfe tape to be leak free

Right..

The only problem I can see is if I tighten the thermo well compression in place, I won't be able to get at the tank nut, and vice versa, if I tighten the tank nut, when I put the thermo well in I won't be able to tighten the compression on that :hmm:
If you get what I mean, or have I got it wrong..?

If I'm thinking correctly, I tighten the thermo well into the compression at the right length, then insert this thru the outer wall and tighten a nut on the inner wall, with seals of course.

no......the thread on the thermowell is the same size as the female thread on the connector, I think its best if I show you a picture of what I mean . Gimme 10 minutes.

Its from a collection of rubber washers in a plumbers box from Toolstaion ..... its on their website I think its called Plumbers Washer kit.
