Can I have some more info on the recipe please?

1. What is the total boil time?
2. Hopp addition times?

K,
as I said UP posted all the info up post, page one, half way down ;)
S

23ltrs
3.5kg pale
500g sugar
60g black malt
hops
35g wgv fwh
23g fuggle fwh

23g wgv 10mins

90mins boil mash 66

yeast WP burton ale yeast.
Do you mean 90 minute boil or 90 minute mash? Or 66 minute mash?

Are hops added at 90 or 60 minutes?

its not my recipe its one Uncle Pumble put up.
But from my understanding the boil is 90 mins and I assume the mash is as well, "normal practice ? ". The 66 is the required mash temperature.
fwh refers to first wort hopping, google it for a better description than I could give.
wgv added 10mins before end.
Hope this helps and I have got UP instructions correct :)

Ah! first wort hopping! Hmm, so no hops in the boil? So I guess that gives a low bitterness but good aroma? Not really of the English Pale Ale style, which should be around 30-65 IBU, rather than the 18 IBU this recipe is coming out at from Beer Smith

I have never followed this process before,so am no expert, (normal practice for me is to add them once boiling ) but have a further read of the google search................... I don't see any reference to removing hops before boil ;)

Springer has the numbers right.

90 min mash @ 66deg C

90 min boil.

Add the main boil hops when running the first runnings from the lauter/mash tun into the copper (first wort hopping)

IBU should be around 35. if you don't get this because the aa in your hops is low, up the hop amounts to suit.

It makes a great beer, bugger all like pedigree, but imho a better beer, Pedigree isn't what it used to be though I don't think it appears to have gone downhill over the last few years.

Pedigree isn't what it used to be though
You can say that again, don't drink much in pubs these days, but had a pint a while back and it was nothing like the pedi I remembered in ancient times
Don't rate the bottled stuff either. :(
Can't wait to get a real try of my brew in the fermenter, was planning on bottling it, but as the brewer water supply is **** up and there's only 19 litres of it now, after fining, don't normally do this but wanted to speed things up, I thing I will sterilise a cornie in the kitchen, when Mrs S. is out at work, toss the brew in and have a go next week, :D Could put it through the beer engine :hmm:

Sorry to be fik Shane, but how do you measure it?

If you have grown your own hops, its a little bit difficult, you need to test in a lab, not sure of the exact process as I have never had the need to know.

If you know the AA content, i.e. bought hops and the supplier has given you the info on the vac pack, just simply put the weight into a program such as beersmith or promash (I use promash) & the boil time and it will work out the Bitterness for you.

You could use one of the calculators on the top of the forum page, but you need to know a little bit more about utilisation etc, its easier to let bs or pm do it for you.

MY WGV are about 5.2% AA therefore about 21 IBU from the FWH
Fuggle were 4.8%AA therefore 19.65 IBU
WGV 5.2% 10 mins gives 4.26 IBU

So roughly 45 IBU think I said 35 earlier in the post forgive my ignorance.

Tis a bloody good pint get it made and stop pulling the numbers apart, as that wont make it any better, keep it simple.

Ahh! Looks like I need to do a bit of research.
Probably not feasible at home.
This season I should have enough hops to experiment with
Ta for reply Shane.

sorry, newbie here, what does the following mean?

35g wgv fwh
23g fuggle fwh

I understand fuggles is a brand name but what's the WGV and FWH stand for?
