Just made another batch of this, great stuff to do shots with!

All you need is 6-7 mars bars and a 70cl bottle of cheap vodka. A friend of mine who is a sales manager for a brewery (can't remember the name of it but they make Jacob Stiener, a Jager type drink) said that the cheap, nasty vodkas are the best for flavouring because the way they are distilled. Also learned the expensive way by using good vodka for a batch! I now only use Imperial vodka.

I know there is only 4 mars bars in the pic, but I ended up using 6. Chop them into little bits.

There are 2 ways to go about making this. The safer, but much slower and harder way is to fill a saucepan with water, with a bowl inside it to mix the vodka and mars together. It's easier to control the temperature, but takes a lot longer to melt and mix into the vodka. The quicker way, although potentially dangerous way is just to use the saucepan directly. Don't let the vodka get too hot as it will create methanol. A good rule of thumb is not hot enough to feel like it's burning you're finger when you dip it in. I used the latter method, partly because I was short on time and partly because of stupidity :haha:

Add the mars to the saucepan and warm it up to melt it a little.

Add the bottle of vodka.

Keep stirring it over a LOW heat until it has all dissolved. Mine was mostly done in this pic but part of the mars is a pain to dissolve into the vodka.

When it's all dissolved, allow to cool down and then bottle. Depending how thick it is, you can chill it down prior to serving.

Enjoy and drink responsibly!

So where is the methanol supposed to come from? :wha:

Even so, don't let it get too hot or your alcohol will evaporate and be lost to atmosphere, and if you're heating it over gas it could go BANG!

But why would anyone want to make this?

Just be careful with the cheap vodka. There are a lot of fake vodkas out there which can be extremely bad for you.

If I were to try this I'd melt the chocolate in a bowl over water, doing as pictured is quite a fire risk and could end up with your kitchen flombayed

says the bloke who made tomato wine
Fair point

Although that was a challenge, not something I instigated, and certainly not something I would repeat.

I remember it too Wendy, also remember one Barnsley Brewer giving his expert advice
To be fair to Ade it was an experiment and I'm sure he bought it along for research purposes only.

ISTR seeing a recipe for a version of this made in a microwave.
But that may have been just a bad dream.

Stevie, you may be getting some stick from the others  but I'd be interested to try this for the parties I host.

How much like Mars does it taste, how sickly is it? (could you do 3-4 shots in an hour, or is it more of a 1 shot per night affair?)

*edit* Also meant to add, does it keep? And would you make it a little in advance and age it for a period of time before the party or make it the days leading up to drinking?

I'd be interested to see what other crazy concoctions you've made!

It tastes just like liquid mars bars, then a warming feeling as it goes down. I do recommend having it in the fridge though otherwise the warming feeling is like a shot of vodka. I'm not a chocolate lover, and I don't find it sickly. I've never had a bad comment about mars vodka and the bottle never lasts long!

No need to age it, and I don't think it will keep long. The reason why I don't think it would, is that I've made white chocolate vodka and I think that lasted about a week in the fridge. To make it, follow the recipe above and use white chocolate buttons. The bags on the 3 for £1 in Tescos are good. Also, Worthers Original toffee vodka isn't too nice. I made this one at about 3am on the morning of the party after I got in from work.

I'll do a tutorial on the perfect Skittles vodka in a couple of months when a friend has a housewarming party.

Skittles is a lot more time consuming in the fact that each one needs filtering, which takes ages!

I've done skittle vodka before a few times and each time it's gone down a treat. The last time I made all 5 flavours/colours was for a house party ~3 years ago.

Note there are numerous ways you can make skittle vodka - at least which colours / flavours to mix. I prefer seperating them all out and making 5 seperate flavours, others mix a few, and some mix all together.

I can't remember how many packets I used initially, but I remember thinking it was too much (probably in the region of £25-£30.

Seperate out the flavours:
Red - Strawberry
Orange - Orange
Yellow - Lemon
Green - Lime
Purple - Blackcurrant (UK) or Grape (US).

Pop the skittles into a bottle of vodka, (ensuring there is enough room for the volume to increase if you are adding a lot). Leave in the bottle until all the skittles have dissolved shaking vigorously every few days, the coloured coating doesn't take that long to go, but it will take a while for the rest of the skittle component.

I actually found that at a certain point it gets too cost prohibitive to make strong flavoured skittle vodka. At which point I switched to using actual fruit. Which worked out quicker to dissolve and cheaper (but requires more filtering).

The strawberry was soo good I made it again without the skittles and just the spare fruit I had grown last summer. It was good, dangerously good. A 1L bottle disappeared one evening with 5 friends.

I've since tried a blackcurrant infused flavour (again from home grown), and the flavour wasn't intense and didn't mask the vodka as much, probably including extra sugar would have helped (as that's what essentially the purple skittle vodka does).

I've got some photos of it somewhere, and it looks trule divine!

As promised I found my pics:

first batch of Skittles in: (I think I did at least 3 batches before I switched to fruit)

After a day or so, the vodka starts to take on the colouring. Note the small white skittles at the bottom, with enough time and shaking, they will dissolve too.

Werthers original vodka is always a winner.

My 'personal' recipe is 2/3's a bottle of vodka, then 2 1/2 packs of the tube Werthers (They fit in the neck better) leave for a few days in the freezer, job done.

Also my Rhubarb and Custard, and the Strawberry and Cream went far too quickly, Sherbert Pips are also fun.

Maraschino cherries work well, although do end up trying to get the vodka soaked cherries out of the bottle

My first post, new and innocent but reading a lot !!!
I have made toffee vodka by using the the toffee flavoured ice cream topping ( and the other favours as well ie strawberry.) They cost about £1 a bottle depending on whether you use a brand name or in some cases the shops own make.
It dissolves saves all that heating and melting (and possible dangers mentioned).
It works really well and you can vary the amount you add to suit your taste. Finally you only need to add a small amount ( about one third of the bottle) so it can still be put in the freezer and will remain liquid and retains that vodka kick. We make a few each christmas and they are usually gone by New Years !!
I have read in other threads about toffee apple cider. I really fancy this but worry about getting the process of heating and nearly burning the honey to get that toffee favour.
I am looking to make my first of 21L batch of cider this weekend using apple juice etc but NO sugar ( as i said i have been reading a lot).
May try a dash of the ice cream toffee ( and maybe the strawberry) in a few bottles to see if it works.
Still getting use to the protocals so next time will try and add what i have made and a witty life affirming line!!
Picked up some fantastic advice already so thanks.

What a waste of good absolute, you're meant to do all that stuff with el-cheapo :D

I experimented with all that stuff years ago, now I just buy the essence, chuck in some sugar and the job's a goodun :D

I have to agree with Scott, You use it with the cheap stuff to take the edge of it :D
