The last time I went to Maplins was to collect a copy of Windows that I'd purchased on their website for in store collection. It took them 10 minutes to figure out what I meant by "ordered online to collect in store", 5 minutes to figure out how to enter my order code into their system, then another 10 minutes to actually find where it'd been put.... They then insisted on taking my email address etc (which was already on the ruddy order, I ordered online) and tried to sell me a loyalty scheme card.......
These days I have Amazon Prime, and so long as I order early enough in the day most things get delivered the same day.... Plus if it's faulty they refund me immediately (or send a replacement), and in some cases I don't even have to return the item. Unlike a certain other online retailer who once refused to replace a £140 motherboard that was faulty out of the box, on the basis that I'd had it more than 5 days (reported them to trading standards via correct channels, told I had a case but they didn't pursue it as they rarely do these days. So much for sale of goods act and EU law, which are only helpful if you are willing to pay to go to small claims court...).
High prices and rubbish customer service is the more likely culprit IMHO, oh and having staff who don't actually know a thing about the products they're selling... My one experience of a PC World store was the same though, asked for a 128mb (yeah, was a few years back... lol) stick of 133Mhz SDRam, assistant paled, pointed in the direction of PC components and whimpered, bought a 512mb stick from a small store for less money a few months later. lol
If it wasn't for the loss of jobs, I'd actually cheer every time I see another joke of a high street chain go under.
