My wife can't see me whilst sat in my chair, in the living room, behind my computer, because the wall where my chair is is further back than the wall behind my pc.... This is the closest that I have to a man cave, with my PC monitor swung out in front of me, and my headset on my head.... Sometimes I even have sound playing through my headset.

And a vitual handpump on the PC screen?

What a wonderful photo. The assortment of containers, the tub of Edme DME on the shelf, that SHIRT! Every man should have a cave or corner to call his own and this epitomises that satisfaction of being master of one's own domain. Love it.

There’s a nice story about Dad’s ‘Sherry’. He made two types, Medium Sweet and Dry, and kept a half gallon plastic bottle of each on his boat. One breezy day, returning from spinning for mackerel, he was hailed by a Dinghy Racing Club’s safety boat, who asked if he could tow one that they had just righted after a capsize, back to the Marina.

He was surprised to see it was being crewed by a couple of middle-aged women, not teenagers, and half way across Plymouth Sound saw they were both shivering so badly, that he slowed down, shortened the tow, and threw a bottle of his sherry to each of them, shouting ‘Get some of that down you – it’ll warm you up’.

It was only when he saw their horrified faces that he remembered that to differentiate them, and keep the contents from prying eyes, he’d written ‘Paraffin’ on one, and ‘Red Diesel’ on the other!

I don’t brew in it but there’s plenty consumption of homebrew in there! It’s mainly for drinking, chilling and jamming as it’s full of guitars! (And due to Covid, my office)

In the process of remodelling my man cave!
Plaster boarding the ceiling, put in down lights and relocated the extractor hood.
I have radials to run 2 consecutive 3kw elements and pumps. Next job is to wire up the sockets, plumb the sink with water and waste then build a single level worktop.
Flooring, bar and entertain system after that!

I share my Man Cave, which I call The Brewery Tap, with the vintage 4 Kilowatt Lister single-cylinder lighting plant which supplied all our electricity for ten years, when we increased our mortgage to have the mains connected in 1987. The pressure barrel next to the loudspeaker used to have ‘Do Not Drink’ on it, as it contains Red Diesel – a gallon of which would run the Genny for 4 hours. It used to start itself up when any light was switched on, and stop when the last was switched off, but it is just hand-cranked now during power cuts and for demonstrations.

A China-handled beer engine is just out of the picture, and whilst I could play George Formby records whilst sitting on the stool (I have his CDs), it’s New Orleans Jazz , the music of choice in my teenage years, that I listen to now. The large white gauge shows how many feet of water are in our well.



Seeing the peaceful scene outside makes it hard to believe that on December 27th 1979 I had to stop the generator, as the Tavy was in spate, and the river level had risen to the bottom of its flywheels! The second-fastest flowing river in England I’m told, it was back within its banks by the following afternoon.

Our house is self-built, we took an early 1960's bungalow, stripped it to a bare shell and extended out and upwards. With a living room in the new extension there was a delicate negotiation about what would become of the original one? Answer: Man cave!

Working full-time on the house was a very rewarding experience, although there was a certain "oh **** - what have we done??!!" feeling at this stage:

But all's well that ends well. :^)

Next project is to use the left-over building materials to build a homebrew shed/den of iniquity in a corner of the garden...
