I've been drinking some of those malty energy drink things lately as I love malt... But not beer :shock:

This has got me thinking, are there such things as wines or ciders made from malt extract?
Would be kinda nice making my own malty drink that's sweetish and not bitter.

Don't tell me to drink sweet beer :nah: :nah: :wink:

I've been toying with the idea myself. There's a lot of leeway with them where you can make them more beerlike (hoppy) or more meadlike, depending on your fancy.
 
Just been looking into braggot, not sure how to go about making it as its more of a beer makers recipe and way of doing things than my way (a humble wine and cider maker) :whistle:

But it sounds really lovely. :party:
 
Looks like it should be straighforward for a non-beer brewer if you just get some tins of unhopped (or hopped) malt extract and a shed-load of honey, not to mention a booze-tolerant yeast strain. I may have added this to my projects list - thanks :-)

I'm sure we could help you craft a recipe that suits your methods and end goal.
 
What sort of ABV are you looking to make, Intelekt?
Wyeast do some high tolerance yeasts (e.g. dry mead yeast) that go up to 18% if you were going for a liqueur / dessert type drink, otherwise you'd probably be ok with a strong Belgian style yeast.
From what I can see, most recipes that are out there are fairly strong stuff, not seen anything commercially under 7% really.

I am quite tempted to purge a DJ and have a wee crack at making some of this stuff (says the guy who has made a total of 3 kit brews, one slightly partial-mashed). I may bugger it up, but if I do I'll be sure to share my mistakes :-)
 
Thx Phettebs - I'm on that one too. I rooted out some old DJ's so I think I'll give this a crack :-)

Abv wise I'm looking at an easy drinking beer to wine 7 - 10% I guess, not a liqueur :nah:

I have a 23 year old mead I made er... 23 years ago that I have a sip of sometimes, but I find this to be a bit heavy if you know what I mean :shock:
As I have took a liking to the malty energy drinks, I guess I am looking for an alcoholic version of this... :cheers:
 
Try this recipe.
I made it for my wife. It has the flavour of a light lager but because of the low hopping it is really full of malt sweetie goodness. :)
OG 1040
FG 1008
3 KG Crisp Malt
1 KG Munic Malt
750g wheat malt
500g spray malt in boil.
35g Hallertauer hops start of boil.
5g Hallertauer hops last 15 minutes.
