Hi Gareth, I’m looking to get stared with a couple of 5L kegs. How does the soda stream setup compare to CO2 cartridges? Will probably be adding some 10L kegs in down the line.

Hi Gareth,

I brew all grain once a month on a 10 litre batch. Been looking for a keg set up. What would you recommend?

Thanks,

Sam

Hi Sam,

I would suggest getting 2x5L system. It would give you loads more flexibility. If you up grade to flow control tap I'll pop in a free ice jacket.

Is it practical to cool a 5L keg in the fridge without the CO2 fittings and tap? I don't have much fridge space. I'm wondering if gas or beer would escape if I put the fittings on while there was some pressure from the already carbonated beer that I draw off from a pressure barrel. Even on Scotland's north coast, we're bound to get some long, warm days and mild nights. Can you supply kegs smaller than 5L?

Our customers tend to store in the fridge or garage and simply pop the tap fitting on when there ready to drink - purge the keg with C02 to replace the air and re-pressurise . I would recommend doing the only once help prevent against contamination. if you are going to store for long periods it would suggest getting the pressure release lid.

hope this helps

Thanks. And can you supply smaller kegs? I'm only planning to use the keg for a couple of days when the shed is too warm.

Yes we do either 5L or 10L give me a shout what you want i can put a price together. or simply order on the site. Order by 10pm tonight and we can have them before the weekend.

Happy brewing Gareth

Do you think the 5L keg would fit in a standard fridge without upsetting the missus too much? Really new to this and just bottled half my first batch and king kegged the rest but after the bottles I’m stuck with a warm beer as the king is huge! I’m eventually thinking (if it works) 3/4 5L kegs as my braumeister gives me 19-20L. So could have one active keg in the fridge and the other 2/3 storing the beer. Also very open to suggestions and discounts

Hi Sean, the 5L fit nicely in the fridge, I would recommend store the others in a cool place until the one in the fridge is empty. You can find dimensions here

https://www.darkfarm.co.uk/2018/07/11/5l-10l-mini-keg-size-and-dimensions/

We also sell the ice jacket to keep the 5L keg cool for hours outside.

Hope this helps Gareth

Thanks for the reply Gareth. Very tempted to take the leap. What would be the best price for 1 complete set up and 2 spare kegs?

I like the look of these kegs n stuff ..how are people cooling them and do you prime with sugar first?

When I rack off a 23 litre brew:
  • 10 litres goes into a Growler to be carbonated with CO2. (*)
  • 10 litres goes into a Growler with 10g (**) of sugar and put back in the fridge at 19*C.
  • The rest is bottled (usually 3 x 650ml bottles) with 4g of sugar and put back in the fridge at 19*C.
(*) I generally have one Growler "In Use" which leaves me a spare Tap through which I can carbonate a second one.

(**)
The carbonation with 10g of sugar is sufficient to keep nasties out of the Growler; and if you use too much sugar it becomes very difficult to install the Tap due to foaming!

Thanks Dutto...how do you cope with multiple batches? I usually have 3 or 4 types of beer on the go. Also are the growlers, one carbonated, like a pb...they keep for months?

In a nutshell it just takes planning; especially when working out what you need (want) to drink!

However, I also have 2 x 25 litre and 2 x 10 litre PB's with CO2 injection possible via a Sodastream system + capped and flip-top bottles (which I am phasing out).

When Santa arrives, I will probably ask for another 10 litre Growler and Tap; and then stop using the 25 litre PB's and the capped bottles.

So far, I've never had a Growler "go off" or lose pressure on me. I bought some caps with pressure release valves on the top and took a sugar carbonated Growler over to France in March. I broached it about eight weeks after it was transferred. It was great so I don't expect any more deterioration than I would expect from a bottle.

One benefit of the Growlers is that I can move them into the cooler end of the garage if we get a repeat of last summer. I could have moved the bottles but it is easier to move 2 x 10 litre Growlers rather than moving (and finding space for) 40 x 500ml bottles!

Hi Gareth, I'm in need of the following for a new research project at work, what would the price be?
2x10L and 2x5L kegs, 3 flow control taps 1 pack CO2 and 1 ice jacket.
