This may be really obvious but I noticed something today that might help newbs like me.

If you're using a boiler with a tap to run hot liqour into the mash tun, check the temperature of the liquor coming out of the tap.

If your boiler is like mine, the tap is below the level of the heating element. The water that occupies the space below the heating element will almost certainly be stone cold, unless you've stirred the liquor first due to a phenomenon that I can't remember the name of :oops:. This means if you're running liquor straight into the mash tun, you're potentially running loads of cold liquor in first, and you won't hit the desired strike temperature. I noticed it today during my second brewday, and jugged the first 4 or so cold litres into the sink. ;)
