The lunatics in charge of the asylum are looking to go ahead with minimum prices for alcohol

"The Government intends to consult on the strategy over the summer with a view to introducing legislation as soon as possible."

http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/poli ... 82831.html

funnily enough ..... "The move was met with opposition from the drinks industry" :nono:

but the best quote I read was ......... "Under the plans, buy-one-get-one-free deals could be banned but half-price deals could stay"

I know there is the argument that BOGOF encourages you to buy more quantity (ie 24 cans instead of 12) wheras 1/2 price you would just get your 12 cans and pay less, but that is a very weak argument :wha:

So the home brew hobby could well be on the increase  Good job I've been increasing my bottled stock recently, I could be sitting on a good investment  Just need a few more bottles of Lagavulin to set aside ;)

I don't suppose you get any of them on a BOGOF   and I don't suppose the minimum alcohol price will e

The thing that worries me if it gets too big is that it'll get noticed... :(
At the moment we're on to a good thing, real ale at home without tax....

I can't see it myself. I'll be prepared to bet that there will be a bit of a spike of WOW and TC (TJ?) brewing in the months to come but I'm also be prepared to bet that the sort of people who's idea of good drink is Tesco Crofters Cider at 2 quid a bottle aren't going to put in the effort to brew successfully.

They won't be prepared to watch a bucket for two weeks, then watch some bottles for a month and finally get a drink 6 or 7 weeks down the line.

What it might well mean for us is a small glut of basic kit in nearly new condition on ebay not long after though. :thumb:

...and, if I pop my rose-tinted specs on for a second, maybe, just maybe, it might drag a few people's palettes up a bracket or two to grow the demand just a little for decent beer and cider. That wouldn't be a bad thing but I don't see the effect being massive.

I think it has the danger of really hammering the plastic-pub trade though, the target audience will still buy the Crofters but perversely they'll buy more of that because it's still cheaper per pissedness even at the higher price and spend even less on C*&$ing in the pub...

+1 with all the above :thumb:

Me and the lads from work call homebrewing ' The worlds best kept secret' - as long as it has no effect on the price of our materials we need to brew, let the rest of 'em gerronwiyit :D :D

A friend at work has spent the last 2 Christmas's helping out at a Christmas refuge for the homeless of which a lot of them were alcoholics. They even had to remove the hand sanitizer as they would drink it for the alcohol. Can't see these people having the will power to let a brew mature.

You will see more black market alcohol and more illegal stills being set up.

Listened to the radio today and a consultant in a hospital said that he has patients who drink 200 units a week!!!!.

Now if you think a 2 litre bottle of cider with 10 units is as low as £2 then you could be an alcoholic for £40.00 not that bad an addiction quite cheap, so really you can see why they want to tighten up.

Someone also reckons supermarkets will have to start discounting something else as a loss leader to drag us in and it has been sugested it will be fruit and veg so we will all become healthy

Suddenly oranges are not my favourite fruit.

I have the dubious honour of living in Llandrindod Wells. Or basically the town with the most problem drug users per capita in the UK.

After living here for 8 years I don't doubt that this minimum pricing will have no effect at all. I don't mind people drinking to excess if they can handle it, the problem users are those who have a predisposition to violence after drinking.

I would have said anyone convicted of a violent offence whilst under the influence should get a 6 month sobriety order on the spot. This would act in partnership with a suspended sentence, so if they drank, they would go to jail.

I re-iterate, I think the lovely public scamming morally upright members of our noble ranks have completely missed what the problem with drink is.

On a lighter note, bogof on grape juice would be utterly awesome.

Probably the worst effects of alcohol is the domestic violence which tends to go unseen from the TV cameras in city centres on a Saturday night. As an ex policeman I seemed to spend a lot of my time dealing with domestics and alcohol was always involved. I can't see that being stopped by minimum pricing.

I think most small brewers welcome minimum pricing. The mass produced crap is far to cheap and it will even up the playing field when it comes to spirits and wine. I personally think its a good thing and that 40p a unit isnt high enough.

The best thing for brewers would be scrapping of the duty escalator. You can sign the E-petition here http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/29664

Please pass it on to anyone and everyone.

Im planning on working in the alcohol trade and well if the price goes up the more profit i will make so it wont affect the brewers only the econemy and the rest of britian. The human race was thought to have become farmers to be able to grow grains to make beer. So in affect if it wasnt for beer we would still be hunter gaverers.

Well I was contacted by BBC 3 Counties Radio this morning as they were discussing The rising cost of alcohol and a possible resurgence in home brewing. . .

With the Result . . . . .

Yours truly is talking on BBC3 Counties Radio between 5:30PM and 6:00 PM on the subject of brewing at home

Better lay off the :drink: until afterwards
