is there a standard way to Liquor back ie 1 litre of water to reduce by 1 specific gravity?
I dont want to keep adding small amounts of water and continually check the gravity :wha:

I use brewing software (e.g. StrangeBrew which is free). I set in the brew length I have achieved, put in enough malt to get the current gravity, and then set the brew length to be longer, until I get the gravity I want.

(Current Volume in Litres * Current Gravity ) / Desired Gravity = Target Volume

For example I want a 1.048 Beer I have produced 20L at 1.055 therefore

20 * 55 / 48 = 1100 / 48 = 22.92L

So I would need to add 2.92L of dearated cooled boiled water.

I've done a couple of brews at a friendly 5BBL microbrewery. When asked to liquor back at the end of the boil he handed me a hosepipe and said "about 1 minutes worth, then I fine tune in the fermenter" . Straight from the mains? yes, and his beer is way better than mine of course.

I throw tap water in without any issues, at the most I'll add a tiny bit of campden..

It's rare I ever want to 'top up' as I've been using my system for so long I have it tuned in. But if I do it is water straight from the tap. I have a megaflow hot water system which means there is no header tank so I can add warm water if I want. I'm very lucky here, the water is great and there is no chlorine taste.
