Have any of you fellow Ubuntians tried this?

http://ebox-platform.com/product/

Work have just invested £3600 on an 8 core Xeon server (upon my recommendation  ) from Dell which arrives in 4 days  but i'm severely limited on time to set it up with Ubuntu Server to replace the now dying Windows 2000 server box with my current workloads.

just wondered if you guys have come across it?

i know, i know, it's probably not going to be as secure as doing it myself, but i'll go through it with a fine tooth comb to double check shortly afterwards... but it would impress the boss if i could have the entire server up and running in a day instead of a month or two

Looks v. interesting - I'll be downloading a copy and having a play :)

let me know what you think EB. cos i'm 'arf tempted to stick it on the work server for simplicity :thumb:

I got ebox running within an hour this afternoon on the beast of a server that arrived today :D :thumb:

haven't got around to fully testing it yet but it was a real breeze to install and i've got email server and files permission controlled (via user groups) set up already... that would be weeks of work normally

ran a security scan on it and it's not flagging any red items. just a couple of yellows that i'll iron out tomorrow where i've got samba allowing guest access :? .

i'm well impressed with it so far :ugeek:

question for y'all...

has anyone used Unison? is it possible to have Unison continuously sync files with another drive without the using Cron to automate?

i thought about using Cron to schedule a backup/sync with Unison every ten minutes to an external NAS drive we have, so if the server goes down, people can simply just open stuff up from the NAS drive instead of the main server, without data loss, and continue working, then when the servers back up it automagically pulls the changed/new files from the NAS, back onto the main server... but my worry is with that ten minute timing, that data could get lost, and or that the previous Unison job via cron would still be running when the new one gets called.

any suggestions?

cant really call it a NAS. it's a more Network Allocated **** box. a single hard drive that is slow as hell.

but i want a seperate live backup solution. should the server die, colleagues can then simply switch to the external network drive instead of the server ;)

We use NetApp's SAN solutions for our clients who need it, which works really well.

Quite expensive though.

i dont think the boss would agree to forking out for a SAN after spending over 3 grand plus vat on the new sever

We spent more than 3 grand on our SFPs for the inter site link between the two data centers . . . and use the other SAN as a backup device

i wish we had that sort of budget :D

3 grand i think was a little high for a small business of 14 people

looks good!

i've just got back home after a 30 hour straight shift at the office thanks to the old windows 2000 server deciding it was going to corrupt it's own active directory, and get memory leaks galore at 10pm last night.

it was just sheer luck that i'd finalised the new ubuntu server about an hour before it happened. had to stay all the way through the night to get everyones files, emails and everything transferred over the the new domain before people started turning up at 8:30 am. 18 client pc's and well over 600gb of data transferred and manually sorted and i managed to finish just as the first person strolled through the door!

had to stay aslong as i could to iron out the swap over glitches, but now i'm shattered *passes out on the floor*

fecking windoze server could've waited another week for gods sake! the new one had only accrued about an hour of uptime from making the last setting and final restart!

dont think you guys will see much of me tonight
