Lager kits - do you need very clean (with very few particles )and soft water?

I know that lagers made from all grain require very good quality water. What about kits with malt extract?
I suspect I should try adding a distilled water to the malt extract as only water was removed from it when it was concentrated. However, not absolutely sure
