An opposition leader needs to think lightning fast on his/her feet to be effective

In 5yrs time the chickens on brexit and corona virus will have well and truly come home to roost for good or bad,
And the voting public are fickle.

I remember after Blairs huge landslide win in 1997 most of the public and a lot of the press thought the tories were finished,
The tories were considered to be totaly Kaput and spent as a political force and party.

They will grow again under him, but they are finished in Scotland, so the chances of a Labour UK Govt. in the future are not good.

What is needed is a Scottish Labour Party which is independent to the current Labour Party. There's a lot of Scots who don't support SNP or want independence.

There are, but unfortunately for Labour not enough for them to regain a significant number of seats. Nailing their colours to the Unionist mast early doors was an error of judgement as the vast majority of those who are pro-remain are older Conservative voters.

Lets be honest the vote was as much about getting rid of Corbyn than it was about Brexit, i didn't even know he was a remainer, we are out why should his Brexit views have any bearing on how he leads the party.

Key workers have been "overlooked and underpaid" and there will have to be a "reckoning" after the coronavirus crisis, the new Labour leader has said.

Sir Keir Starmer told the BBC's Andrew Marr: "They were last and now they've got to be first."

He said another decade of austerity would be a mistake, saying it was "inevitable" that the wealthy would have to pay more.

The 57-year-old won the contest to succeed Jeremy Corbyn on Saturday.

He defeated Lisa Nandy and Rebecca Long-Bailey in a ballot of party members and other supporters.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir is expected to announce members of his shadow cabinet, saying that it will be "balanced across the party, across the country" and will be diverse.

Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Sir Keir said: "What we can't do is go back to business as usual we now know who the key workers are, they have very often been overlooked, underpaid and there has got to be a change."

He said funding of the NHS had to be looked at and "we have to think about how we reimagine the economy going forward".

"I think it is inevitable that we have to ask those that have more to pay more," he said.

"When we are through [the coronavirus crisis] there is going to have to be a reckoning, we are going to have to do things differently."

I dont see how there wont be more austerity. Sunak has spent billions on propping up workers wages. That'll have to be paid for and I dont think people will stomach tax increases.

True. But it wont happen because like services but dont want to pay for them. It's one of the reasons Convervatives keep getting voted in and Labour never do. People in the UK like low taxes

I have no objection to people getting rich,Stinking rich even. But stashing the wealth in offshore accounts deprives the nations people any benifit whatsoever.
The figures are eyewatering.

Not a similar post as he's only just announced part of his new team............however we'll see, hopefully now we're out he will work WITH the government to get the best for the country as a whole, something Corbyn didn't do and one of the reasons he was hammered at the election.

You do realize not all of 'the people' are Brexiters. Of course he's going to appoint some remainers as almost half of those who voted, voted remain. He needs to pack his shadow cabinet with the best people he can, regardless of them being remain/brexit. If you look at what BJ has done, he's got rid of any experienced and/or intelligent MPs and just packed his cabinet on their Brexit credentials alone. He's therefore ended up with some very dense people in his cabinet such as priti patel and Dominic Raab .I'd also argue that remain is as far away from inward looking as you can get as it's about REMAINING in the EU looking outward, cooperation and internationalism

He's not the New Labour Leader, he's the new Labour leader, for heavens sake. He's got nothing to do with New Labour. Starmer was a remainer; so he got elected leader because he didn't connect with the people? How does that work? Nigel Garage was an MEP, too, I might remind you. Was he an inward looking remainer? Do talk sense.

Interesting choice for labour. Uber remainer, who wrote their disastrous election policy as regards Brexit. One of Tony Blair's New Labour chums, which may cause him problems with the momentum mob, he was an appalling head of the DPP IMHO, politicising the department. Has indicated he might campaign to re-join depending on circumstances. Can't see him appealing to the lost Labour heartlands, but the champagne socialist London set will lap him up and he could steal a lot of votes from the imploding Fib Dems. I read he had appointed David Lammy and Ed Milliband, which I initially thought was a joke, but it appears to be true, so there will be massive comedy value there.

Not my cup of tea, but as I hate nearly all politicians equally, that doesn't really tell you anything.

Beware the barrister, we had one recently Malcolm Turnbull, everyone had high hopes of his leadership but he turned out to be a damp squid. I don't know a lot about Starmer but whoever guides the UK after this current crisis is going to have to show a lot of leadership to get the debt back down to a respectable level.
