Keeping qualities of malt?

How long can you keep malt before it goes off? I have some black malt which is about year old so I'm just wondering whether it will be still fit to use.

If you have kept it dry and reasonably air tight it will be ok.
You will know if it's off as it will smell musty (you can't mistake it).
