Kaspersky are rated fifth (400 million customers) in a top ten paid for antivirus review i have just read, does anyone here use it and if so what are your thoughts.

Kaspersky Labs: Warning over Russian anti-virus software

The British government has issued a fresh warning about the security risks of using Russian anti-virus software.
The National Cyber Security Centre is to write to all government departments warning against using the products for systems related to national security.
The UK cyber-security agency will say the software could be exploited by the Russian government.
Security firm Kaspersky Labs, accused in the US of being used by the Russian state for espionage, denied wrongdoing.
Kaspersky Labs is widely used by consumers and businesses across the globe, although they are not being advised to stop using the software, as well as by some parts of the UK government.
Around the world, 400 million people use Kaspersky products.

I use Windows Defender. In this day and age it does the job just as well as any paid for antivirus. Anti virus packages like this aren't really needed on most home PCs.

Don't use them. Currently AVG (and prior to that Avast) and Malwarebytes is what I use.

I used AVG for many years then there was a problem with the tray icon not loading a boot so i tried Avast and have been using that for a few months it has changed a lot since last time i used it.

Defender has always scored low when you read reviews (as below) could you elaborate?

Pros

Comes with Windows 8 and Windows 10. Improved scores in tests by independent labs. Very good score in our antiphishing test.

Cons

Poor score in our hands-on malware blocking test. So-so score in our malicious URL blocking test.

Bottom Line

If you have Windows 8 or Windows 10, Microsoft's Windows Defender is ready and waiting to protect you against malware. However, our tests show that you're better off with a free add-on antivirus solution.

I have that on an old laptop (was windows XP) its good but i don't think i could use it on my main PC i guess i am too used to Windows 10 and lazy.

.

Yeah, I had it originally as a windows 10 dual boot, but when Windows kept doing those interminable updates I rage quit and uninstalled. I think I was trying to rehearse for a job interview but couldn't because of an essential update that took about 3 hours. That and having to ask Microsoft's permission to use my own computer finally flipped my switch >:-(

I think the warning was more towards companies that held information that they may not want the Russian government having.

I get my advice on this sort of thing from a couple of friends, both are software engineers working on web apps and one actually specialises in security. I've asked them to elaborate on why Defender is better than Avast, Norton etc. and will pass on the message once they get back to me.

IIRC it's something along the lines of it's good enough for a home PC, but you might want something better if your PC is being used for some kind of specialist work.

I use Kaspersky (total security), and keep returning to it. I recently tried Bitdefender, but it was TOO secure, kept breaking updates. 10 device license off Amazon cost me £22 (never renew direct, they all rob you of you do..) for 12 months.
