I'm at a wedding in a converted barn.

There are dried hops being used as decorations.

So clearly something to do with the brewing process back in the day.

I also note these unusual roofs/rooves. Given the horizontal flap, I guessed that the top would rotate and the vertical bit would protect whatever it is from the prevailing weather.

I've googled it and found the answer, but thought it might be interesting to post here.

Think you're in what is/once was called an oasthouse which was used to dry hops.

That’s right, we have loads in Kent.

“Oast” is an old English word for kiln.

Yup. Oast house, hop kiln or kell.

I was quite interested but seems no one else gave a toss. Ironic given the amount of drinking going on :)

Useful knowledge, it came up in two different crosswords this week. Once as the answer and once as part of the wordplay.

I've had it come up in a crossword too, that was how I learned what they are. I also saw a TV program where someone from a hop growing background converted one into a house, think it was presented by George Clarke
