Retired biologist, fisheries management. Retired after working in NW England & Wales for many years, mainly covering shellfish stocks. (cockles, unfortunately in one too-memorable year)
Spent over 2 years in Saudi back in the 70s. Nearly half of it at sea - the Red Sea really was a wonderful place! Hey, and you must have got the wrong supplier for your spirits. If I remember correctly (unlikely!!) my supplier back then was called Smokey Cruz, who apparently was a Quaker (perhaps he didn't touch a drop of it himself??), but was clearly an expert. The stuff was supposedly distilled 5 times, and if you bought it "uncut" was basically pure ethanol. Clear as a bell, no flavour at all - perfect for adding juniper essence & making lovely G&T
Plus you could drink a ridiculous amount without getting too much of a hangover. Or, at least I could do 40 years ago...... no longer got the constitution, I fear
Wonderful place Saudi Arabia :-o.
And as for siddique, my conclusion it was better used as paint thinners. Consequently I didn't touch a drop of alcohol for the rest of my stays.
