Been down to London to see my son. I took him a few beers. Reporting back, he tells me, the bitter was fine, but the hazy Citra IPA was undrinkable and contaminated.

Of course, I pressed him further, and he said it was "metallic, and a weird sour taste".

I have drunk plenty of this batch, and whilst I'm not claiming an award-winner, they all tasted and smelt absolutely fine to me.

Seriously, any ideas, guys? Other than cutting him out of my will, obviously! :D
 
It could be, but it's something I've never experienced. I just had one earlier, and honestly, I think it's just hop bitterness. It is pretty hoppy, and additionally it's getting on, and has lost much of the citrus tang it had when young. It's still perfectly drinkable for me, but I can see it wouldn't suit all tastes.

Hard to tell what could be wrong remotely, heavy hopped could well be astringency, some don't mind a bit of astringency, myself included as long as it isn't over the top. I entered a Citra IPA into a comp a couple of years ago, a week or two later I cracked a bottle and there was some astringency. It was to late to withdraw from the comp so braced myself for a low score. Although the judges picked it up it came 4th or fifth in that section. For me it didn't taste to bad, as I say I can live with a little bit, maybe that is what your son could taste. Really needs more description.
 
Was it a bottled off a keg? When ever I have had a hoppy beer oxidise I get a metallic/caramel type flavour.

No, I don't use kegs, I just bottle.

I'm not too concerned; it's all the more for me! After all, as i remarked to my mate when he said he didn't like one of my brews much, I don't make beer for your benefit, I make it for mine!

I still think the most likely explanation is hop bitterness. The only other alternative is some localised infection in one bottle, Possible, but not likely, I think.
 
Probably not related....but my wife noted on Sat that her coke (drink, nothing else🙄) was tasting off. I tried it and there was nothing wrong with it. I suggested she do a COVID test as we figured her taste had gone a bit off. That evening she had another can and all was fine (and no COVID). We put it down to her eating Sushi for lunch which had affected her taste (maybe the soy sauce). Could be your son ate something which didn't mix with the beer?
 
not the same but if I eat blue cheese my mouth feels like I’ve just licked a 9v battery. Metallic taste and tingles on my tounge. Possibly your son has the same type of reaction to hoppy beer ?

I put up a post some months ago which caused much derision, where I stated that hoppy beers make me sneeze. I also found that strong beer and spirits made me giddy!
 
All beer makes me sneeze, I have anti histamines at the ready when I have a drink!
Same here. My nose seems to be permanently blocked and I'm wondering if it's a reaction to hoppy ales. Having said that, I used to drink commercial lagers and if they contained sulphites it was like full blown hay-fever.
 
It all comes back to my theory that it's all about weed, really. The American trend to flowery hoppy beers is an attempt to produce a more weed-like buzz than conventional beers, aimed especially at the youth market. Bear in mind weed is legal or quasi-legal in a few States now, with more to come in the near future.

It's legal here too as long as you don't go over the 10 plant limit, but I wouldn't ruin a good beer with it. (when I say legal, that is if you don't get caught) Over 10 plants and one is deemed a dealer.
