ive given the keg a good seeing to..... :?

sanitized it, removed the tap and stripped it down,
sorted out the float system with new tubing

ive ordered a new brass inlet valve[ the old un was ally and corroded ] and co2 dispenser and bulbs....

gonna fill it with 4 galls of ginger beer over the weekend, will add priming sugar and fit a unvented cap on it if the valve does not arrive in time....
does this sound ok,

any other tips...?

Personally, I wouldn't put ginger beer in a plastic keg i would be putting normal beer in at a later date.

UP

Does the lid have a separate pressure relief rubber or is it combined with the valve? I know the new valve will have it combined.

ive fitted the new brass valve,
filled the keg with ginger beer, its all i had that needed racking [its been undisturbed in the bin for 4 weeks... :D ]
the pressure has built up and ive vented it [the air] with the valve rubber,

ive got some co2 capsules to charge the keg later when its all sorted,

ive not fitted the float to the tap yet as i had to get a new piece of tubing,

thinking out allowed... :hmm:

with the float system,
if i was to remove the clear cap part, that makes the float buoyant, and allowed the tube to sink [with the base of the float attached ] would this be more reliable that having the float bobbing about...?

I put a stainless steel bolt through my float to eith it down a bit, seems to work.

Now you have put the lid on how are you going to attach the float?

If you remove the lid you will remove all the pressure and them you will need to re prime the beer to boild the pressure up in the keg again.

You should be relying on the pressure in the keg from the priming for dispensing, not the sparklet bulbs.

You should be able to drink most of the keg before needing to add any CO2 via a sparklet. If you try and dispense the whole keg with the gas from sparklets you will use loads of the little bulbs and it will soon work out quite pricey,

i thought about a little weight to sink the float a bit, :hmm:
i will have a play with the float in a bucket of water first,

i had to move the g/beer into the keg or bottle it,

i will have the top off,and add the float when its sorted, the g/beer only cost about 4 quid to make so its sacrificial i have a pair of students here to run the tests on..

i have found this pic of how the float should/may act when floating..

does this seem about right,

Doesn't much resemble mine, for a start I don't have an elbow behind my tap.

My float is fairly obvious as it has a floaty ball in it which keeps it the rightway up, the pipe is below the ball, and I have put a bolt below that to really stabilise it.

I would take a pick but they are both in use at the moment.

UPDATE;

this may be of interest to anyone new to a king keg, :hmm:

i replaced the manky ali valve, with a new shiney brass one,
filled the keg with ginger beer,
left it for a week. [while i obtained the tubing,]
then i fitted the tube, and float [with a little vaseline around the push in tap connector]
the tube is short enough so that it can drop to the base of the keg when empty,

the float worked exactly as in the diagram posted earlier,
gave it a quick stir and resealed, the ginger beer was already well carbonated as it was sparkling..

i released air from the keg via the valve rubber as it built up its co2 over a couple of days,

tried it this morning, there is plenty of pressure and it dispenses ginger beer like a bought one,

thanks to everyone who offered their advice..
