Hi Folks,

I thought I should introduce myself. I am a pensioner who has realised beer is getting to be an expensive luxury, considering I drink it mainly because I like it, and because I like social interaction. Well those are my excuses. It's a nice way of meeting all sorts of people . The best by far outside of the PC that is!

I brewed regularly in the 1980s, but that fizzled out, when more and more pubs started to stock real ale. But now even that has become real 'pale', and most of it tastes like sludge. (Not that I have ever tasted sludge, unless you count Keg.) It's also all the rage to serve bitter beer ice cold, which isn't very nice at all. So I thought it was time I got some new equipment together, and will shortly be making a visit to ye olde Home-brew Shoppe in Newton Road.

There's only one way for me to brew, and that is by using the full-on grains, mash and sparge technique. The only Extract beer I ever made, since finding dear old Dave Line's books, was one of his recipes for Fullers ESB (Or was it ESP?). That was a nice easy recipe for 'five gallons' that tasted like proper beer. (Note I said gallons. To me a litre is what I would have used to get a ciggie going way back when I smoked.)

You'll gather I am hardly a youngster, but I can still just about get around. Not imbibing so much now, as seniority seems to slow down my consumption rate. But at least I am losing a bit of weight!
So Hi again everyone. I am slowly getting back into the swing, and I hope to make some friends along the way.

John . . . Newton road ?? Would that be Hamstead Homebrew . . . Run by Rob and Chris Hogg?

Great shop to have as a LHBS . . . . I call in whenever I'm passing to chat and generally spend too much money . . . and drink their coffee.

Welcome back . . . Things have changed a bit since Dave's Day . . . but a lot of it is just the same

Howdy! I'm just on the other side in longbridge. Every older person I've met always has a story to do with homebrew - mostly how it used to involve bananas and balloons and there might still be some up the loft. Nice to meet you! :)

Hi John, not a pensioner yet but certainly moving into the old fart category. As Tony said homebrewing has changed a lot since the David Line days but for the better. Used to love brewing his beers in those days but things change, sure you will find all you need on this site.

Welcome to the forum, as others say its changed a lot since the bad old days, I still remember that taste.
Good results are to be had now, loads of help and knowledge on here. :D

Welcome Wobbly,I'm at the other end of the Newton Road to you ;)
The Hamstead HB shop is dead handy if you find that you're 2 caps short after you've started bottling :wha:

Welcome to the forum.

Thank you for mentioning the shop, I only have 2 days left of working in that area before I change my job so now I know it's there and I dont care so much about sciving off for 10 minutes I'll have to pop in at some point before friday and lighten my wallet.

Nice one.

Hi again folks.

Thanks for the great welcome. And yes, the shop I mention is the Hamstead Home brew shop.

Baggy: I am familiar enough with Sandwell of course, but I live in Great Barr, near the Cat & Fiddle pub. So Hi neighbour!

Springer: I suppose a lot has changed. Youtube tells me so at least, but apart from a few modernising tips, (Like using a cool-box in the process) I will be brewing more or less as I always have done.
I don't bottle the stuff, but fill my glass straight from a 5 gallon cask. I don't use any pressurising gadgets. I pour off what I can and then let the pressure build again. I find that a pint and a half is plenty at one sitting anyhow!

Dennis: Thanks again. I am sure this forum will be a boon to me brew!

Rob: I know where Longbridge is too, but it changed so much, last time I went there I got lost! (John Walker!)

Johnnyboy: I would love to take up the invite, but I'd have to get a Taxi or 'bus it! A shame, as I would like to taste some of your brew.. Well anyone's really Lol!

Aleman: As I said, I will be getting to know the Hamstead shop from the inside too. Must choose a day when there is room for my dray!

Thanks again everyone. Nice to meet. If I missed anyone out, I apologise!

Regards
John :drink:

Hi there Eddie,

I know the Coppice! I spent a lot of time in the 'Crown' by the 'Rising Sun Island', in the 70s. Happy Happy days!

Bonksies! :drink:
Yum Yum

John

The crown is walking distance from me unfortuatley the rising sun is no longer with us been closed down for a couple of years such a waste was bought by a land developer who thought the farm land at the rear was owned by the pub so now its standing there

That's a shame indeed. I think some of these developers must be allergic to grass!

Cheers Eddie.

Hi Mr wobbly! :D

Just picked up on this thread and I couldn't help noticing that you are very local to me (four oaks) and even spookier, this is my first post! I have been doing bog standard kits for about 5 years now and recently gone up to dried extract brewing. I'm now thinking why on earth didn't I do this sooner! I would like to move on up to the next level though ;) the full mash!! Lacking time and money at the moment though but it would be great to learn from a pro ;)
I'm sure I have a bank's recipe somewhere I could give you....
:drink:
Be good to hear from you!

Keep well
Tim
