Any IT experts on here.

Last night I put my computer in sleep mode and now it won't turn back on.

It powers back with all the lights and fans etc but the screen is blank. The blue light on the screen comes on but then goes orange as if the computer is not on.

Tried turning on and off, unplugging power etc but nothing. Most help online points to changing settings on the computer but I can't get that far. I have unplugged all the usb devices and even tried another mouse to wake the computer but nothing.

I can't think of anything immediately. But please give details of the make, model and operating system as this will help others. I've heard a recent Windows 10 update can cause problems. Can you get into the BIOS to change the boot order? Do you have a USB stick ot USB hard drive? If yes, you should be able to boot from it and run a 'repair'.

Is the battery removable? If yes, removing it would ensure that the computer is totally shut down. Is this blue light an LED?

Try googling your pc and how to boot into safe mode to rule out a driver error.

I shut down my laptop today and then found I could not start it! I held the power button down for twenty seconds and the light flashed red. Then I was able to start it normally.

It's a self build.
It's windows 7 all up to date.

I can't get into bios or safe mode because the screen is blank so can't see anything. Only thing I haven't tried is a different monitor lead. Will do tonight

It's a long time since I did it but you press start then keep tapping a key to get it into safe mode so not having a picture isn't a problem.

Change the source on your monitor if it has that option.

Try a different video output from your graphics card.

Try a different monitor, the whole lot including cable.

Will see if I can source a monitor. I can borrow a lead from work but taking the monitor out of the office won't go unnoticed

GFX card issue
See if you have an onboard GFX card you could switch the monitor too

Does the power light on your monitor flash too like its in standby mode but not coming on?\

OP said the light on the monitor goes blue then orange. He has surmised, and I agree, that the monitor is not getting a video signal from the desktop PC.

Try removing the power cable from the computer and press and hold the power button for 30+ secs to try and drain residual power from the system. See if it boots up after that.

If the above doesn't work you may have a hardware issue. If there is an error during POST then you would normally get some beeps from the system to indicate something has failed or there's a configuration issue.

If you have a dedicated graphics card installed you could try removing that and trying the on-board graphics if they are available.

If you don't have an onboard graphics port and you suspect that your card is at fault you can pickup a 2nd hand card from the likes of CEX for very little cash (about a tenner), I would not be keen on buying a new card to test it on the off chance the PSU has fried something, in my experience its usually down to PSU, Gfx card or Mobo that have gone. Just about everything in a pc has a mean time to failure , it's why i switch it of.

Yeah, I thought about buying a UPS, but I've had one PSU die and one went up in flames (and then died). The computer operates on 12vdc and lower so it's ironic that UPS's generate AC from batteries only to be rectified by the PSU!
