Is This An Adequate Boil?

Hi,

I'm trying to build an electric BIAB system using an induction hob. I bought a Tefal 2100 watt burner and tried a test boil of 10 litres of water. It got up temp with the lid and boiled quite vigorously, I then removed the lid to see how it got on. The boil became less vigorous, but I think it was more than a simmer. The temperature hovered around 99C. I shot a short video of the boil and I've posted it up on YouTube:



My question is will this boil be strong enough to make a good wort or does it need to be more vigorous? My intention is to do small batch brewing of around 12 litres at a time.

Its the temperature and the duration the temp is held at that is important rather than what the boil looks like ( albeit visual indicators are/were used rather than actually measuring temps)

What is the ideal temperature then? Does it need to be 100C? After 60 minutes it had boiled off about 2.5 litres of water and was sitting at a temp of around 95C whilst still appearing to boil.

I am intending on getting a bigger 33/50L kettle, that one is around 12 litres, and I think I will probably need to insulate it to keep the boil temp up. I could put a lid on it, but then there would be no way for the vapour to escape.
 
Don't worry so much about the dms lid on thing so much any more. Apparently the precursors to dms are almost non-existent in modern malts, especially if they're aren't lager malts.

Your video is an almost perfect example of a rolling boil. It does not need to be more vigorous.


Okay, thanks for posting that, very useful.

I didn't mention it before, but I bought the burner from Argos so I have three weeks left to decide if it's powerful enough or not. I think my next step then will be to actually decide on what kettle I'm going to buy sooner rather than later, then give it another go with a volume of water closer to the volume I'll actually be boiling and see how it goes.

It's more than enough of a boil. As long as you have a plan to get rid of all the steam then I'd say you're good to get a brew on.
 
You could always add some insulation around the side, keeps heat in and avoids inadvertent burns if someone should happen to touch it.
 
The wok burner on the cooker works a treat for a boil in a 15 litre pot.
 
I just about manage with my 32 litre pot on the wok burner. Temp probe hovers around 99 and it's not that vigorous but everything seems to turn out fine.
