Hi all
I'm a kit brewer I've made about 20 kits. Some have been nicer than other but not had a bad one yet. Touch wood. I'm quite happy knocking up a kit in 30 mins bottling 2 weeks later. It is so easy,
I don't see the need to move on.
But there is this nagging feeling that I don't know if it tastes right. Is it supposed to taste like this? I know it doesn't really matter if I like the beer but am I doing right?
How do you measure your beers? Do you compare to commercial beers? Or just accept it's good if you like it?

It all depends what your purpose is.
Are you trying to brew beer to enjoy drinking it? Then do not worry!
If you are brewing to try to clone a commercial example, or to enter into a competition as a certain style, then yes you would need to analyse it. In which case, the BJCP programme might be an idea - learn to taste and analyse your beer.

Otherwise, if you like it, then great!

I'm the same as you...just doing kits, with a bit of dry hopping, up to now. I think what you need to consider unless Youngs or coopers bring out a Fosters kit as long as your beers don't taste off ie infected, and you like it you are doing a good job. I bet if we both compared our efforts on the same kit they would be slightly different due to water or slight temp or brew time ( mine seem to go on for three weeks!)but they will both be nice. True some kits like Wherry, courage are homebrew versions of brewery ales but they won't be exactly the same as buying it in the pub as too the variance from pub to pub.

Cheers

Let someone else who is a beer drinker taste it and be prepared for some critiscm.

About a year ago i let a mate (drinks nothing but guinness) try a kit stout i had made, i was reasonably happy with it, him screwing his face up at tasting it was enough to let me know it wasn't ideal. Today i took a bottle of my allgrain stout up for him to try, he tasted it, passed a few comments, tasted it again, passed a few more comments, he ended up taking what was left home with him, that to me is a pass mark that it is reasonably ok but yet I'm not happy with it as i think i can get it better.

But is someone who ONLY drinks Guinness a bench mark? My mate only drinks canned boddingtons or John smiths on draught...and pulls a face at most craft style beers including my efforts so I don't take that as any indication. My father in law who worked at a brewery for decades thinks my beer is very drinkable. ..
I've tried virtually every craft style, bitter, stout, ale on sale in asda..some I like some I don't. .I picked 6 out for my mate which I thought were on the blander side of things..he struggled with all of themy. I think a seasoned professional brewer could probably give you an unbiased informed answer and some direction otherwise it's just personal opinion and preference..

Do you enjoy drinking your beer? If the answer is yes then you're doing it right. :thumb:

Look for your local homebrew club. You will always get good honest constructive criticism. And also pointers on how to improve what your all ready doing.

If you like the taste then it tastes right. My friends who just drink Bud and the like don't enjoy my beer, but others who also homebrew do like it, doesn't really matter though because I like it. Where are you based? I'm sure someone on here could point you to a local hb club.

I'm in Wrexham. I've had a look online but can't find a local hb club.
Yeh I know you're right if I like it who cares but I'd like to know if it should taste like this.
I quite often see post about beer not tasting good and what have they done wrong. But never my beer tastes gorgeous what have I done wrong.

It could be just kits. I found kit beer nice and as good beer I found in the pub but I never made a kit I could describe as gorgeous (may be it's just me and I never made the right kit?). AG on the other hand, you'll be make "gorgeous" beer all the time. Maybe it's time to step over to the dark side http://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=51779
