Is It Possible To Find Out The ABV After Fermentation

Hi all. What are the processes for finding out the ABV. I have read that I need to take a Gravety reading before and after the Fermentation Process. Is this the only way as I forgot to do it before hand. Also... after I bottle my beer and add some sugar does this not increase the alcohol content of the beer.
