I recently read up a bit on this having used it from day one, and apparently it helps with the cool protein break when chilling.
The issue here is that I don't chill - I'm only capable of 2 gallon boils so topping up with cool water is my chilling process. Is it worth meeting using it? I can't do any harm of course, but meh...

use 1 protofloc tablet in the last 15 mins of boil or 1 5ml teaspoon irish moss it helps clear the beer but if you want to use gelatine in the fermenter add 15g dissolved in preboiled water the day before bottling or you could use polyclar 24 hours before you add the gelatine. Its still worth using even if you dont chill

I'm sure I've read somewhere that it's better to cool the wort before adding the topup cold water :wha:
The important thing is how your brew turn out. It isn't a must to add copper finings but most find it beneficial.

I boiled an extract-plus-steeped-crystal half wort (all I had pot capacity for on the gas stove) and clean forgot about the irish moss , but there were extenuating circumstances as I shall reveal elsewhere . I too have to cool by mixing but I let the clear water warm up in a hot room ,near the woodburner and let the wort cool in its pot for as long as possible to try to equalise things a bit . I was wondering about the need for the moss though , this not being a proper mash :hmm:
