Has anyone ever had a crust form like this? Right now the mix is at 24 Degrees (maybe a little warm).

Hi and welcome to the forum. It looks a bit like a piece of art. And I have no idea why it looks like that.

Welcome to the forum. What you are seeing is quite normal but I always find it fascinating.

Not trying to alarm you but I would seriously try and get the temperature down. At those temperatures you are likely to brew not only alcohol but fusal alcohols and other off flavours. You really need to brew between 18 and 21c. Fermentation is exothermic and it is the early stages when the yeast is growing that are the most crucial. This is when unwanted by products can be made.

Good Luck

Cool, thanks for the info and thanks for the warm welcome. The heating belt has been turned off now.... *googles* "fusal alcohols".

I think GA's spellcheck is playing up :D
Try searching for fusel - from the German for bad liquor which should give you an idea on why they are not good in large amounts.

I used the one that came with St Peters IPA kit. From memory it was a Muntons one but I'm not sure. The final brew should be around 5.5% but I have started it at around 30 pints instead of 32.

I've just gotta make sure this liver knows who's boss you see.

I can't spell, Failed english language 'o' leval 5 times, but does that make me a bad brewer :hmm: :hmm:

It was Muntons Premium Gold Active Brewing Yeast. I'll put it back in the bin now... my hands smell of fish from last night. Hahah..

Awesome community thanks for your fast response.

I had 2 turn out like that last year-both from kits & one from a St Peters. (My avatar being one). Never worked out why,but it was a warm summer.
Awesome. Together we have the skills. :drunk:

It wasn't a criticism of your spelling (or brewing). Just trying to save another new brewer the time searching for the right thing.

Crazy Krausen. Never seen one quite like that before. In my expert opinion, fermentation has begun.

You may quite possibly be correct. Hooray for beer! :thumb:

Don't have a pic - but last year I brewed a Geordie Scottish Export to 20 pints using Nottingham yeast, when it got going it looked like a collection of Arctic icebergs floating at the top. I don't use heat belts ever, my temp is about 18C average.

terrible images of 2 girls 1 cup came flooding back to me after seeing that pic. if you've not seen the video, seriously, dont go searching.

Thanks now that will be the first thing that goes through my mind on first sip.
