Just had a look on the Maplin site pricing up a digital thermometer and came across the infrared ones.
Seems like they would be great, just point and shoot and no risk of contamination when taking temps.

Any thoughts

I'm probably completely wrong - and often am, making a habit of it... but don't infra red thermometers only take the surface temperature?

I suppose that's fine for a few applications but there will be time when you want to get an even reading..?

I wouldn't bother. I use them all the time at work, they are nowhere near accurate enough for our purposes. They're designed for quick looks at machinery parts and solid surfaces, not liquids.
