Hi guys, really appreciate a few opinions on whether or not I have an infection. I just remove the krausen collar from my fv, and it smelled a bit cidery. It also looks like this;

I had a bad feeling about this one because of something daft I did while making it, so maybe I'm expecting it to go wrong... what do you think?

I was measuring out boiling water when my glass measuring jug exploded! While I waited for the kettle to reboil, I started to sweep up the glass. The lid was closed on my fv at the time. With the dustpan in my left hand and the brush in my right, instead of putting the broken glass in the glass bin, I opened the lid on the fv and the dirty brush made contact with the inside of the fv. My mind went blank and instead of resterilising the fv, I wiped it clean and I'm kicking myself now. Learnt a lesson whether its infected or not... No one to blame but myself. How long would you suggest leaving it? I want to get on with a new kit before too long if this ones gone tits up. Thanks

Looks OK to me. See how it develops but I wouldn't be overly concerned... not yet at least.

Try not to worry about it siure it'll be fine, had a mate helping me rack to sf other day and he brushed the sterile lid against his leg, thought he was gonna have a panic attack, we sterilise so much mainly because we can so, why not. Its far more resilient stuff than we often give it credit for

Actually, you can't sterilise. It's not possible without laboratory/medical operating theatre facilities. What we do is sanitise, and this, in the most part, lowers the bacteria count to an acceptable level. Personally, (and each to his own view of course) I think there is too much paranoia about 'sterilising'. I have found a wash in hot water and a bit of thin bleach with a good rinse has always worked fine for me.

thanks for your opinions.

I think I might be a little paranoid with this one because I was half expecting it to go wrong because of the start. I'm not at home for a while now, so hopefully it'll have cleared by the time I look next. If there's any developements when it gets toward bottling, no doubt I'll be back on here for advice. Thanks... found this forum really helpful
