fill boiler to the top with water and wait until you hit strike temp. add 3.15kg pale malt bag,
Doesn't the boiler overflow at this point? The grain will displace some water.

ah, i leave about 3L out and then top up with hot water, a mix of tap-hot water and boiling water. forgot to mention that

Great info, thanks guys. £5 of voile added to the list :D

Keep an eye on Nisbet's clearance store on eBay. I picked up a new but slightly dented 40L Buffalo for £66 inc carriage a few weeks ago. Added a ball valve and hop stopper without any drilling. Bought a piece of voile for £5. Looking forward to my first AG brew next Wednesday.

Ahh that's great. It was nisbets I was looking at but they were full price (still the cheapest though). I'm not in a rush so I'll keep an eye out for a bargain, thanks :thumb:

Have a look here. Genrally you can make them a reasonable offer and they will accept it. They are "second's" though so may have a dent or been used before. They haven't had any 40l buffalo's on there fore a while unfortunately.

It sounds like I was lucky then.

I've got a Buffalo 40L, and I've been toying with the idea of getting a second. The price of these things is all over the place, even new:

£125 direct from Nisbet's

and £170 here

That's a hell of a range! And a few days ago these prices were different again.

Anyway, it's well worth being patient and getting a bargain.

Fortunately I'm not in a rush. I've got MORE than enough in my stash to keep me going for ages. I'll need to wait until I've freed up some bottles and finished all my maturing before even thinking about brewing another batch :D

I really want to try my most recent beer before taking the plunge though.
