Hydrometer question

Hi everyone, i'm completely new to brewing, and started my first brew last Wednesday (coopers lager kit). I have a question about reading hydrometers. When you use the hydrometer, are you supposed to leave it to settle, because I get a completely different reading from when I first put it in, and after leaving it settle for a couple of minutes.

You're probably best going with the "later" reading after any gas bubbles have had the chance to escape and stop sticking to the hydrometer..... Unless of course it's got a leak and is slowly sinking.
