Well following on from this thread I'm very tempted to take up that offer as it works out cheaper with delivery than getting the stuff from my nearest HBS. I may not enjoy all grain brewing so I don't wnat to over buy ingredients that I may never use in the future.

Anyway to take up that offer I have to design a beer using 4kg of grain and a single hop, as a total novice I have an idea but no knowledge of whether it would work.

My idea is:-

3.2kg Pale Malt
600g Crystal Malt
200g Chocolate Malt

with Marynka hops

My desire would be a dark rich bitter with a brew length of 15-19L as I have a 19L stock pot to do a BIAB

I have no idea how much of the hops one would put in at one stage.

So...... any comments or advice?

Thanks
Nic

Grain wise looks good but @19ltr your going to get 5%abv and @ 15ltr 7% ABV. Not knowing what your actual ABV is somewhat bluring how many hops you need, I'd fix the brew length to somewhere your happy, then you can look at bittering hops. But I've never tried those hops so could only work out the maths as per flavours I'm in the Dark :wha:

also after you've sorted a lower grain bill for 19l (maybe you want around 3.8% to 4.5%abv ), post the aa % of the hops (i too don't know those hops as far as taste goes ) good luck with your brew and well done for going full AG

For the grains:

You should get a nice deep toffee/caramel effect from that much crystal malt.
It would be a bit smokey/coffee with that much chocolate malt (which I find is actually can be more bitter than black malt).
You can effectively ignore the crystal and chocolate malt in the ABV calculations to make it easier to work out the strength.

Well that company says the aa% is 7.4% while this website lists it at 9-12% and describes it as
Mainly a bittering hop for the most part. Marynka is an all purpose hop. It is very versatile combining good bittering potential with a high aroma. It is grown in Poland, recommended for any pilsner, lager , ale, or wheats.
it seems very versatile which is why I thought it might be good but equally there is a choice of Admiral, Marynka, Liberty, Fuggles, Goldings, Hallertauer Hersbrucker or Saaz. So if any others would be a more predictable/suitable choice then please I'm open to suggestions.

I shall aim for a 19L brew length which will require a kind of sparging and probably a little dilution at the end.

TIA

if you know the ibu of the recipe try adding hop amounts at half at start of boil, quarter at half way and quarter at 15 mins to go ,

Well I'm trying to put a recipe together so I don't know the ibu.

I think I will go for
30g @ 60 mins
20g @ 30 mins
10g @ 10 mins

And see how that works out
