Grape concentrate has 75-80% of the water removed from grape juice. Further concentration is not possible due to the saturation of sugar.
Youngs Brewbuddy 30 kits (£20 plus £3 for sugar) come with 1 litre of grape concentrate, enough to make up about 4 litres of grape juice. This is then diluted with sugar and water to make 21.6 litres of wine, of which only 20% is grape juice.
The California Connosseur kits (£43, including sugar) come with 7.5 litres of grape juice from concentrate plus an unspecified amount of invert sugar, to make 23 litres of wine. At best this is 33% grape juice, but as the proportion of sugar is unspecified, this could be more like 25%, which is 20% more juice than the Brewbuddy at considerably more than 20% in price but significantly more body. It therefore seems logical that the addition of 1 x 245g can of Youngs wine enhancer, (£2.50) which is pure concentrate, (unlike the 900g can, which contains an unspecified amount of glucose syrup) could significantly improve the winebuddy at little extra cost.
I will try this with my next batch of cabernet sauvignon and throw in a handful a dried elderberries to give extra tannin and colour.
