Presenter Adrian Chiles -

I drink more than the recommend units per week and have done for a long time i wonder if many of us have ever sat down and worked out just how much we do drink, so the question is how many units on average do you drink each week?

Presenter Adrian Chiles has urged people to track their alcohol intake after revealing he sometimes drank 80 or 100 units a week.

The BBC 5 live host said it was "horrifying" to add up his alcohol consumption, which was well over the recommended weekly 14 units.

He was told by a doctor he "can't carry on like this" and his liver damage could cause cirrhosis or death.

Chiles, 51, has tackled the issue of drinking in a new BBC documentary.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Chiles said: "I was just staggered what I was putting away".

He said most of his drinking was "completely mundane and harmless", adding: "I don't really get drunk, I don't misbehave, I don't drink during the day, I don't drink alone, I don't particularly stay up late.

"I just drink something every day.

"There are loads of us who just drink too much and I just wondered why I was so dependent on it in a small way, or is it a big way."

Chiles' comments have prompted many people to speak about their own drinking habits. Actress Linda Robson told ITV's Loose Women she thought "maybe I could have been on the way to being an alcoholic" when she used to drink a bottle of wine a night.

She said: "My big thing was because I didn't drink in the daytime then I didn't have a problem and I could make myself wait until that time every night so I obviously didn't have a problem.

"But I was still functioning, I was still coming into work."

I do drink more than the reccomended limit
Not especialy proud of it,But it is good pain relief.

But no matter how drunk i would never assault any man or woman in the street.

With Covid we didn't change the quantity drunk on a single day, but we went from 3 drinking evenings a week to 6 & sometimes 7.
So gone from borderline 14-16 up to 28 I guess

What happened JCR, and what have they done to you? I think you mentioned something about being run over by a car in one of your posts.
If that's too personal or painful a question, I apologise and please PM Chippy to delete my post.

3-4 long necks a night, sometimes more. Recently went into hospital with a perforated lung. Every guy in the ward was walking around with a catheter and a bag. Don't drink more than 2 pints now, and have 3 days off a week from drinking.

Due to Covid, working from home and why the heck not I was having a few on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays about a year ago, and was enjoying a few extra during the summer BBQ’s. As a result I put on some weight and gained 1.5 stone.
I am now back running and doing parkrun on Saturday mornings. So I have restricted the consumption to Saturday nights where I have 2-3 pints of homebrew. I really look forward to them and bit by bit the weight is coming back off. Just under 12lbs to go. I’d love one now.

I've halved my units my units per week in the last few weeks. After my op i'll be somewhere inbetween the old level and the current level. I've lost 8lbs in 4 weeks weeks. Not going back to my extravagant eating/drinking habits, but not living like a saint either. My current paupers diet is a bit too wearing to keep up long term.

Must admit to drinking far more than is healthy, but I had a nasty accident during lockdown and been limping around ever since so thats my excuse. My GP who wouldn't see anyone got breast cancer after telling me to stop indulging in unhealthy habits, so I dont fell so bad about it now.

I may be reading this wrong and i hope i am, could you explain what you mean by - "I dont fell so bad about it now"

I started tracking alcohol consumption a while back after I decided I needed to cut down. I am now at the 20-24 units per week range. I am what is classed as a binge drinker though as this is compressed into Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. I have no alcohol Monday to Thursday.

I remember watching that Adrian Chiles programme and I was genuinely stunned that one person felt the need to drink that much in a week. I think I am around the 15-20 units per week but would like it to be a little less. If I have less than normal I feel better because of it, less sleepy, less sluggish.

I'm probably 16 units a week. Only drink Thurs-Sun, a couple of homebrews each night and maybe a glass of wine too on one night. I really enjoy my beer but really don't like to drink to excess.

I grew up in the 70s/80s in a very drink-based culture. One of my earliest memories was seeing the yard-of-ale contest on a Sat night at the social club. My dad's mates all went out regularly and drank 5-8 pints on a midweek skittles night. On work trips, my old boss used to pride himself on drinking a gallon of beer a night, sometimes those trips were a month long. Sometimes he's drink 8 pints over an extended lunchtime. With all this excess, none of them seemed to get ill and all lived to ripe old ages, except my dad who was the 2-pint-a-night man. So I take all this health advice with a pinch of salt.

I drink about 50% of the production as friends neck the rest. I brew two fermenters twice a month which totals some 140 bottles. So I drink 70/4 a week - 18 bottles. A tad too much so should I give more away...
