How long will malt keep?

I have some wheat malt (uncrushed) dated December 2011 which I was thinking about dumping but I did a mini mash today to test it out. It achieved 80% mash efficiency.It has been stored in a spare room in a dustbin so good conditions but I am surprised at its longevity.

As long as you keep it cool, dry and dark it will keep for a long time, I've used uncrushed over a year old.
You will know if it's off, the smell is horrible!

i brewed a batch before xmas with old wheat and 3 others with new wheat . only the old 1 left , probably won't finish it .

I put 1LB of wheat with 1 litre of water in a thermos flask for a couple of hours, drained the flask then added more water left it 15 minutes and drained it again.Repeated this once more Did not worry about sanitation or filtering because wort was then thrown away. Seems a simple test to make sure malt is in good order.
