I have around 90 bottles that I've salvaged from pubs, friends, drinking sessions, etc, that I use for brewing, but I have found that they are a real paint to store. Other than keeping them in cardboard boxes under the stairs, are there any better ways to store them while theyare not in use?

My bottle store.  I now have twice as many as that.

They are not proper beer crates unfortunately. There is a dairy on the business were I work so I may see if they have any old ones I can buy.

As a thought, is if safe to sterilise bottles ahead of time and store them in a within an airtight bin bag in a box ready for use?

Up to a point, I always used to disinfect, rinse and dry my bottles then cap them with tinfoil or cling film, and have then used them with no further treatment up to a month later.

Now I just wash, dry and cover, then they get a quick sloosh of Videne before use.

When you say 'wash' what exactly do you mean? how do you wash them before disinfecting them?

A bottle tree and rinser is one of the most useful items I have bought. It acts as storage and makes bottling easy rather than a chore.

Under the sink at present, but it's full now... Should start getting some crates. I try to sanitize them as I go (w/Star San no-rinse stuff), wrap a piece of foil around the top and then tuck them away. They're then ready to use come bottling day and this method surely beats sanitizing all bottles at one go!

Mildly soapy water and a bottle brush, then hot rinsed, then drained inverted and left to dry.

i wash and drip dry

use a bucket or crate with a bit of kitchen roll in to soak up drips
then when i come to use i sanitize and fill

after filled i store in crates or on a shelves

I use heavy duty Cardboard boxes which hold exactly 40 pint bottles and can be stacked on top of each other.... i can also transport 40 full bottles in these boxes too :thumb:
