Hi all,
How do you measure your water into your HLT?
Do you:-

1, Calibrate and mark the HLT
2, Use a jug and add the water to the HLT
3, None of those but something wonderful and amazing

If 1, i may have a problem as my HLT/boiler isn't see through as it's a blue barrel!

Thanks
Andy

You can use #1 with a blue barrel, you just need to fit a sight glass and mark that up with your measured quantities.

Sight tube suitable calibrated as calum says, or for something really simple how about a dip stick. :D

Yeh, i thought that Calum.
Didn't know if anyone knew of any cheap inline flowmetres.
Ahh, more work needed before i make my first brew, i'll have to look into whats needed.

Thanks

Short term though...

...you could:

1 - lob water in your HLT.
2 - drain. That's your deadspace accounted for.
3 - use other calibrated bucket to add water to HLT giving you the right amount for your brew.

As to how to get the right mash volume OUT of the HLT - that's a totally different question...

...dipstick sounds like not a bad answer TBH.

Mine is calibrated, one side for the mash tun the other for the boiler :D
They work from the top edge of the vessel, i.e, you just touch the top of the liquid to get your reading . ;)

Hmmmmm,

This is becomming more and more confusing.
What type of fitting did/do you use to attach the sight glass?
I've been looking on Screwfix and they have male 1/2" with flange to female compression 15mm but i think 15mm is too big to take the glass!

Dip sticks aren't confusing.
For sight glasses I think you are about there, a 90 degree tank connectors with either a 15mm push fit or compression, bit of ptfe onto a polycarbonate tube works well, can be open top or fed back in. :D
The onestop plastic shop do tube but its in 2 metre lengths and after postage the price adds up, someone needs to buy some and sell it on, which is what I did when I did mine. ;)

You see, i knew there would be a number 3 that i was unaware of.
Fantastic. :drink:

I fill my HLT/boiler as to the top (it's only a 30l), then when it comes measuring the quantities out for mashing and batch sparging I use a one litre jug and fill the mash tun one litre at a time. It's time consuming and very frustrating, but I can't really see a better way given what I've got.

Make sure you calibrate your scales regulary, because my wife has a strange habit of adjusting them....I cannot understand why she does this, maybe its beacause Im just a man. On the good side I now come in at a healthy 12 1/2 sone as opposed to the 16 1/2 that I really am.
