Either Thursday or Friday, I'm having a go at a lager. I currently have a Wilko Cerveza, bought on a whim as it was cheap, but don't want to waste my brewing and bottling time on something pretty tasteless and would rather experiment, even if this means ballsing up.

I'm going to steep 500g pilsner malt that i have and add this, along with Saaz hops and lager yeast.

My question is, I would have added 1kg dme but as I'm using the pilsner malt, how much do I need to reduce the dme by? Or do I just whack the 1kg in still?

My view is that a kg of grain is worth more than 500g of DME. If you steep it at 66C or thereabouts then you might get 75% efficiency so 1kg is the same as 750g of DME. Test your oven and find a low setting which will maintain the temperature of a pan containing the grain in water. I've done it and it works well.

1kg grain is approx 650 g DME. So your 500g grain is about 325g DME.

I would put all the DME in and add another couple of litres of water to make a bit more, or leave at original volume and it will just be a little stronger.

Thanks for the responses folks. I'll give that a try with the oven - hadn't even thought of that before. I'll bung all the DME in as well then and probably go for the extra ABV option.

Cheers.
