Hi all,

Built my boiler last night, 2 kettle ellements (etc) and boiled the water up.
The vessel that i used was an old lime pickle barrel, even after a boil for half an hour there is still a slight acrid smell in the steam and in the barrel when it's been dried out from the pickle.
I soaked the barrel for several weeks in a strong bleach solution to try and remove any residues but i don't think it has done a thorough enough job!

Is there any way i can remove this odour/smell from the barrel as i thnk that it will taint the brew when i warm the liquer and boil wort.

P.s. How long does your elecric boilers take to come to a rolling boil using cold water?

Thanks

Andy

Bicaronate of soda is great for smells and stains. Could give that a go?

Not sure what concentration you'd need though...

Grrrrr, :x

Bloody typical, will continue to boil a few more loads and see if it reduces.

It took an hour to come to a rolling boil from cold, does this sound about right?

This is only minimal, it's a slight acrid smell Pregnant SWMBO said it was really getting to her chest and demanded i stopped (it wasn't that bad, but you don't argue with a pregnant woman) :nono: ;)

I'll have another go at boiling it off tonight.
