Hot break and cold break - what's the deal?

Can someone please explain the function/importance of the hot break and the cold break, and what I can expect if I don't achieve each properly? Sorry for being such a dizzy brewer! Thanks!

Not necessarily true. The no chill method is very popular in the USA and Australia and cloudy beer is not readily reported as an 'issue'.
