Pilgrim is a nice Hop in a smash also, have you tried it yet?

I haven't Stevie. I think I've bought beers that have it in, but can't remember what it's like.

Is this part of a sales ploy to offload some of your massive stash of pilgrim??

Really? Are you sure? What a nice gesture, that would be great. Thank you.

Nice one, cheers Stevie. I'll have to send you some of the Mosaic/Citra once I've made it.

Just cracked a bottle of the Slovenian Pale and it's turned out nicely.

It's been said before that they're somewhere between US and English hops and that seems about right. Quite fruity, but not in your face.

I think I've found a level of Munich I like too, as I've found it a bit overwhelming in previous brews.

Overall a decent beer and we'll worth trying out the Slovenian hops if you haven't already.

I've changed my mind again and will get the stout on today. Partly because the stout grains are already crushed and partly because the Mosaic/Citra could be gone by the summer if I make it now!

The stout is Geterbrewed's Oatmeal Breakfast Stout kit. I thought this would be a good idea so that I'd not have loads of excess grains laying about, but in hindsight it would have probably (definitely!) been cheaper to buy them separately and bin what I didn't use. Either way, should be a tasty brew. I'm torn between bottles and mini kegs for this, I know it would taste far better out of a keg, but not sure I want to drink 9 pints straight. I think it's going to have to be bottles.

The malt is already combined in one large bag and there is one bittering addition of EKG, so at least it will be easier than a multi hopped IPA! The kit came with US-05, which I thought a bit odd. I'd like this to be a bit sweet, so I think I'll use a pack of S-04 instead.

Not much info on the ingredients or recipe, info as follows:

Target OG Unknown
Target FG Unknown
ABV 5%

Pale Malt
Three Types of Crystal
Chocolate Malt
Roasted Barley
Porridge Oats

EKG 60min

Mash at 69c for 90min - I've not mashed this high before, my current thinking is to heat the strike water to 79c, based on the fact that it's normally 76c to mash at 65/66c.

I'll brew it short to 21ltr to make up for the likely poorer efficiency. It's also crossed my mind that stouts can get a bit lively in the FV, but I'm hoping that as S-04 doesn't go mad that it shouldn't try to escape out of the top.

I'll wait for SWMBO to bugger off to work (haha), do a minimal amount of housework, then crack on.

Somehow ended up with 23ltr. Started with 32ltr as always, so must be down to lack of hops. Ended up at 1053 anyway and a guesstimated FG of 1016 isn't far off 5%, so all's well.

Nice and easy brew day, straightforward recipe and plenty of time to put my feet up!

I'll hopefully end up with a creamy sweetish stout in a few weeks.

Go mad, chuck a load of espresso in the fv...

I'm not a dark beer drink per really but a really dry roasty dark beer with coffee seems a good idea to me.

I've not tried a coffee stout, not sure I'm up for 23ltr of it without knowing!

Yeah I guess that's a pretty major commitment. Though as you add it to the fv you could wait its fermented, take out 4L or whatever you can bear, and add the coffee to that. I'm pretty sure mikkeler add theirs to the finished beer

Ive just added two shots of expresso to a stout kit and I deffo taste it after swallowing...a nice lingering taste in the mouth, quite subtle:thumb:

I should probably add that I'm not a massive coffee fan.

Gareth - how did your oatmeal stout turn out?

Fair dos.

It was a very quaffable drink, I have a stout loving mate who rated it and my dad couldn't get enough of it over Xmas. Only got one bottle left which may go tonight. I was thinking of experimenting with it and adding a bit of coffee but as it's the last I think I'll savour it!

Slightly off topic, have you tried Beavertown India Stout? It's bloody good and made me realise I do like black IPA after all. Only got a couple of bottles of mine left after leaving it a while, need to make some more.

No I haven't, only tried the neck oil or whatever it's called, of theirs. Is it really a black IPA though? Sounds like a us hopped stout, though let's be honest, beer is becoming harder and harder to classify as craft brewers mash up (pun intended) styles

Ah yes, you're probably right, thought they were just trying to give it a different name, but I guess the difference is roasted barley. Either way, it tasted nice!
