Hi all.

I made up a coopers IPA yesterday, I've made it before and decided it needed some hops. I made a hop tea with about 25g of mount hood hops (made in a cafetiere and left to steep for about 20 mins then rinsed a couple of times with boiling water).
I used mount hood as it seemed to be the mildest hop I had bought (also bought Nelson sauvin and Chinook) and didn't want to over do it on my first use of hops.

Will this be enough hops to give an extra kick to the kit? And should I add more later in the fermentation, either as a tea or straight in the fv as they are?

Also, what should I do with the hops I used to make the tea? I put them in a tub in the freezer, seemed a waste to chuck em.

Cheers

Greg

Taste it first. Steeping will give you more aroma, but you need to boil them to add bitterness. The more water you use, the better your utilization - but see how it goes! If there's no noticable improvement in hop aroma, you could dry hop directly into the beer.

Sounds to me like you're ready to move to 10 litre extract boils though, to be honest ;)

IPA's are as simple as boiling up your extract in a 12 litre pot, then start going wild on the hops. Single variety beers usually cost me about £14...

What do you mean by rinsing the hops? Why do this? Did you add the hop tea to the fermentor, or some rinsed out hops?!

Thanks for the replies.

I plan to move to all grain later this year (after a loft conversion and building a few sheds) and gathering all the equipment so adding hops to kits will have to do for now.

I think I'll give it 5-6 days then taste it from an SG sample then dry hop it if it needs more. Would more mount hood be ok for flavour or would some Chinook or Nelson sauvin be better?

I just rinsed the hops because the cafeitiere was ralatively small so justran some hot water past to get the extra oils out.

Having a Stone USA oaked Arrogant ******* in brewdog Aberdeen at the moment.
