Hi guys, today I brewed a Coopers Real Ale with 1kg DME, 200g Dextrose, Safale S-04 yeast. I bought 25g of Fuggles hop pellets to see if I could give the kit a bit more flavoring. Not sure if I've stuffed up or not, I decided to make a simple hop tea by bringing 2ltr water to the boil and chucked my hops in (using a hop bag) for 7 mins then added to FV. I have now read that some people think hop tea tastes foul when made with water instead of wort or sugar. Is this the case? Also would I be better off dry hopping? My brew was looking pretty green by the end of it.....bit worried about how it will turn out! O.G was 1.048

Hop tes has always seemed to work OK for me. You could try using more of the water you would add to the kit to try to get a better extraction of hop flavour. I just sieve out with a sterilised colinder. I'm becoming a fan of late hopping to give a fresher hop flavour. Try steeping 10-20g in just off the boil water for 20 minutes, then seive it into your kit, which you do not need to boil.

I've used hop teas before when I have overshot the gravity I was going for and needed to adjust the balance the beer a bit.

Adding hop tea has never been a problem.

I say go for it!

If you boil the hops for perhaps an hour you may find the water tinged red. Apparently hops add a bit of color to the beer as well as bitterness etc.
